BASF and TOTAL Miracle Match for Life golf tournament raises more than $114,000 for lifesaving charities in Southeast Texas

PORT ARTHUR, TX, April 29, 2014 – The 12th annual BASF and TOTAL Miracle Match for Life golf tournament on April 25 raised more than $114,000 for three charities that provide lifesaving health services for people in Southeast Texas — the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program, and LifeShare Blood Centers. Hundreds of golfers, BASF and TOTAL employees, volunteers and spectators were on hand for a day of sports and community fellowship at Brentwood Country Club in Beaumont, Texas, with food and beverages for the tournament donated by area businesses.

“A number of our employees have been marrow donors, and one employee was a match for a patient in need, all as a result of Miracle Match for Life,” said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager for BASF Corporation in Port Arthur, Texas. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with these charities for many years to come and supporting the critical services they provide in our communities.”

“We are honored to serve as the title sponsor for Miracle Match for Life, which is a tremendous partnership that raises thousands of dollars every year to support three worthy organizations right here in Southeast Texas,” said Nigel Tranter, TOTAL Port Arthur Refinery Plant Manager. “Giving back to the community where we live and work is in our DNA at TOTAL and we are proud to help make a difference in so many people’s lives.”

Founded in 2002 as a collaborative partnership between BASF and TOTAL, Miracle Match for Life has raised more than $1.1 million to help educate people and promote awareness of the need for bone marrow donors, blood donations, and cancer screening and prevention in Southeast Texas. The initiative places special emphasis on education and recruitment in African American, Native American and Hispanic communities, where donors and cancer screenings are especially needed.

“Miracle Match for Life has played a key role in increasing cancer awareness and the number of blood and marrow donors in Southeast Texas,” said Hope Guidry-Groves, Program Director for the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program. “More than 10,000 individuals from the Golden Triangle have registered with the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, a significant number that comprises almost 10 percent of our 712 lifesaving donor matches.”

Miracle Match for Life also has made it possible for thousands of women and men to receive mammograms and prostate cancer screenings through the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program.

“We are deeply appreciative of the outstanding companies, sponsors and loving individuals who work so hard to ensure medically underserved men and women in our community receive lifesaving medical care,” said Regina Rogers, Gift of Life Founder and Chair. “The funding and awareness raised during Miracle Match for Life make an immeasurable impact on the scope of our organization’s mission to provide extensive cancer education and screenings throughout seven Southeast Texas counties.”

Funds raised by Miracle Match for Life also support LifeShare Blood Centers, which provides blood components to 11 hospitals in eight Southeast Texas counties and requires approximately 36,000 donations annually.

“The support provided by Miracle Match for Life helps us educate the community about the necessity for blood donations and donor recruitment,” said Robert Taylor, Executive Director of LifeShare Blood Centers. "At times, it is difficult to maintain the blood inventory needed to meet the demand of hospitals we serve. Miracle Match for Life has been vital in promoting awareness of the need for donors.”
