BASF awards scholarships to three local students

MCINTOSH, AL, May 13, 2014 – BASF has awarded scholarships totaling $30,000 to three area students.

Marcus McDaris, a freshman at Alabama Southern Community College (ASCC) and a graduate of Dayspring Academy; John Nicholas “Nick” Carter, a senior at Millry High School; and James Grady Busby Jr., a senior at Fruitdale High School, were each awarded scholarships valued at approximately $10,000 each towards their studies in Chemical Process Technology.

“BASF is pleased to provide scholarships to students who are pursuing careers in the chemical industry,” said George Vann, Vice President of the BASF site in McIntosh, Alabama. “It is important to us that local students have opportunities to prepare themselves to be leaders in our industry.”

BASF’s McIntosh site offers two-year scholarships annually for students participating in the Chemical Process Technology Program at Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville, Alabama. The program prepares students for jobs in the chemical industry. The students receive scholarships based on academic accomplishment, testing, and an interview. The BASF scholarships cover each student’s tuition and fees for up to four semesters at ASCC.

“Each scholarship recipient is offered a summer internship at our facility,” said Lyna’ Schell, Human Resource Manager of the BASF site in McIntosh, Alabama. “This allows the students to connect what they’ve learned in the classroom with real industry applications.”

Carter and Busby will be recognized at upcoming awards ceremonies at their respective schools.
