BASF organizes traffic safety demonstrations for Shuman Elementary students

SAVANNAH, GA, May 16, 2014 – Today, BASF employees organized a traffic safety presentation for Shuman Elementary School with demonstrations provided by the Coastal Area Traffic Enforcement Network (CATEN).

May marks the beginning of a busy summer season on the roads, and for that reason it is designated as Global Youth Traffic Safety Month by the National Organizations for Youth Safety.

“BASF is pleased to present this opportunity to so many children who live in the community around our facility,” said Dusty Allen, Site Manager for BASF in Savannah. “Our employees actively support local school children through science education and other safety programs.”

The program involved all students in grades K through five. Captain William L. Hires, a volunteer with CATEN, performed a bicycle safety demonstration which included instructions for proper helmet use for students in grades K through three, and a representative with the Georgia Department of Transportation performed a demonstration on pedestrian safety and how to properly use crossing lights.

Capt. Hires performed the same traffic safety demonstrations for students in grades four and five, as well as a seat belt safety and truck roll-over demonstration. He also gave a presentation on occupant protection and the proper use of seat belts and demonstrated with a rollover simulator. The rollover simulator is an S-10 Chevrolet pickup truck that rolls over and crash dummies show what happens when a person is not properly belted.

CATEN is one of 16 traffic enforcement networks under the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. The networks conduct concentrated patrols and other enforcement regularly. Beyond enforcement, the coastal network is heavily involved in education. CATEN educates the public about four things they say can save lives in Georgia, “slow down, buckle up, hang up and drive sober.” CATEN’s goal is to reduce traffic fatalities on Georgia roads to below 1,000 for 2014.
