BASF’s largest logistics center is located in the northern part of the plant. It handles one million pallets a year and this makes it Europe’s largest logistics center for packaged chemicals. From here BASF supplies products around the clock to customers all over the world.
Some BASF products cannot be processed further or delivered to customers immediately. This is why the Ludwigshafen site requires sufficient storage space. When the logistics center opened in 2003, more than 50 smaller external storage facilities in Ludwigshafen and Mannheim were replaced. The benefit for the region is that: both cities no longer have to put up with 25,000 truck movements each year.
Around 45,000 consignments a year are handled by the logistics center. This is done using state-of-the-art technology, such as the telpher system with 96 carriages which connects the dispatch center directly to the high-rack warehouse. With a total area of 120,000 square meters, the warehouse has a size that is equivalent to twenty football pitches. The high-rack warehouse is 25 meters high and is able to accommodate 126,000 pallets on its eleven levels.
