BASF helps protect the Chesapeake Bay marina shoreline
WYANDOTTE, MI, August 16, 2016 – Georgetown Yacht Basin keeps waterways clear with BASF Elastocoast®, in the first successful North American marina application of the product. Wave action destabilized the marina’s riprap, resulting in large rocks in the bottom of the navigation channel, and damaging vessels as they move towards the boatlift. To address the issue, Maryland marina, regraded the riprap and applied Elastocoast bonded aggregates to the existing material to form an ecologically integrated structure.
BASF Elastocoast, which was installed by Pervious Paving Contractors, LLC, is a binder applied to aggregates to produce a strongly bonded, porous, monolithic structure used to protect shorelines against erosion by managing sediment. This ecologically compatible solution is resistant to weathering and is proven to last over time.
“Elastocoast offers a new approach to effectively protect shorelines and coastal areas,” said Pierre Couture, Business Development Manager at BASF. “This project demonstrates BASF’s commitment to find a sustainable way to protect the land near waterways.”
“Pervious Paving is excited to work with BASF on this project to showcase how the chemistry behind Elastocoast can change the way shoreline erosion is managed,” said Kevin McBee, President of Pervious Paving. “The installation at Georgetown went very well. We were able to minimize construction time and waste by applying the Elastocoast bonded material over the existing riprap. The system offers many benefits to the contractor, owner and environment.”
