BASF annual chili cook off raises $2,700 for local charities

FREEPORT, TX, December 14, 2016 – Some serious local cooks at the BASF site in Freeport, Texas, recently mixed together silly costumes, high energy and a whole lot of chili powder to raise money and awareness for local United Way partner agencies. The annual event, which caps off the company’s local United Way campaign, raised more than $2,700.

Seventeen employee cook-off teams competed for prizes in categories that included Judges’ Choice, Taster’s Choice and Showmanship Award. As part of the activities, a group of United Way partner agencies set up booths to provide information about their activities and programs.

“It’s important to BASF and our employees to support our local community and the incredible work that is done by United Way,” said Jim Schreiner, Senior Laboratory Services Manager and United Way Campaign Chairman at BASF. “An example of that work is the relief provided during the floods earlier this year that touched a lot of people’s lives, including many of our employees, their families and neighbors.”

BASF Senior Vice President and Freeport Site Manager Chris Witte and his fellow site leadership teammates Beth Holland, Nicki McGlone-Santistevan and Mike McAtee won the Tasters’ Choice award while a panel of judges chose Jonothan Leal, Jonathon Solis, Mike Hurley, and Shawn Whitehair’s chili for the Judges’ Choice award. The Showmanship Award went to the all-German team “We Can Do More than Sauerkraut” that consisted of Christian Beckoetter, Jens Kroneis, Jochen Marschall and Elke Geissler dressed as German housewives.
