BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC challenges future scientists through sponsorship of local chemistry competition

PORT ARTHUR, TX, March 13, 2017 - BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC recently sponsored the Chemical Educational Foundation’s You Be The Chemist Challenge (YBTC) at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Arthur, Texas. The challenge gave Port Arthur students the opportunity to compete for scholarships and strengthen their science backgrounds. BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals sponsors interactive educational activities throughout the year to encourage science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers.

“The employees of BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals show their commitment to local students and the community through their tireless efforts encouraging students to pursue STEM-related careers,” said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager of the Port Arthur plant. “Through challenging and exciting engagement, we are enhancing the education of future scientists.”

YBTC programs are designed to enhance 5-8 science education by introducing the central role of chemistry in all sciences. The YBTC challenge provides a valuable opportunity for students to interact in a contest setting while providing a unique opportunity for a variety of individuals and organizations – including schools, members of the chemical industry, educators and other community partners – to come together and show their support for education.

The Port Arthur site’s African American Employee Group (AAEG) coordinated and volunteered at the event for the second year. “The Port Arthur AAEG group embraces this opportunity to expose younger students to science in a fun and interactive way,” said Sarah Ramirtha, Reliability Engineer and member of the African American Employee Group (AAEG) at BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals.
