BASF’s summer internship program creates career pipeline for future generations
MCINTOSH, AL, August 8, 2017 – BASF offered 17 college students an opportunity to participate in the annual internship program this summer at its site in McIntosh, Alabama. The interns worked closely with employee mentors and received firsthand experience in the areas of chemical process technology, logistics, communications, and engineering.
“To meet our growing workforce needs, BASF continues to expand its annual summer internship program,” said Jason Slinkard, Site Director for BASF in McIntosh. “It’s important for us to partner with local colleges and universities to create a diverse pipeline of talent.”
The interns were selected from universities across the southeast including: Auburn University, University of Mobile, Coastal Alabama Community College, University of South Alabama, Spring Hill College, University of Alabama, the University of Mississippi.
“BASF’s internship program is a great way to introduce students to a career in the chemical industry and the kind of opportunities available to them,” said Mark Weeks, BASF’s Performance Chemicals Technology Group. “It showcases our dynamic, interactive, and collaborative work environment, and gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills.”
The students participated in supervised, on-the-job activities to broaden their knowledge and connect what they have learned in the classroom with real industry applications. Their duties included testing performed in the analytical and quality control labs, and calibrating instruments; including transmitters and switches.
Maria Delgado’s favorite assignment as an intern was testing wastewater, solids, effluents, and products produced at the McIntosh site in the analytical lab.
“I have no doubt that my time spent working with the analytical and quality control team here at BASF has helped to mold me into a better chemist,“ said Delgado.
