It is part of the corporate culture of BASF to engage with the local community. When it was founded in 1865, the company voluntarily provided social services to its workers. Initially, these services included medical care, a safe working environment and qualified living conditions. Education and culture soon complemented BASF’s commitment even outside of company grounds.
As a founding member of the UN Global Compact, BASF concentrates its global social engagement on supporting the United Nations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2017, the BASF Group spent €56 million (about ¥440 million) supporting various social engagement projects that reach out to as many people as possible and have long-term impact. These initiatives include donations, not-for-profit activities (Corporate Citizenship), as well as business-orientated projects (Starting Ventures).
