BASF subsidiary trinamiX strengthens sales network for infrared detectors for Japanese market and starts commercial business

September 16, 2020 – Ludwigshafen, Germany / Tokyo, Japan – trinamiX GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BASF, is strengthening its technical support structure and sales network of the infrared sensing business for the Japanese market. As part of this effort, the company has recently concluded a distribution agreement for infrared detectors with IR System Co., Ltd (IR System). The agreement gives IR System non-exclusive rights to sell the trinamiX infrared detectors Hertzstück™ for the Japanese market. Both partners expect a synergistic effect from the broad business activities of the other. In addition, a driving team within BASF Japan has been set up for the trinamiX infrared sensing business to expand business in Japan and has already begun supplying commercial products into the Japanese market.

The trinamiX infrared detectors are Lead Sulfide/Lead Selenide (PbS/PbSe) photoconductors to detect near-infrared (NIR) light with a wavelength of 1 - 5 μm.  The detectors have a unique encapsulation to protect the chips from degradation by moisture and oxygen. This thin-film encapsulation also makes it possible to use the detectors as bare chips, which drastically reduces the thickness of detector elements and allows the surface mount on electronic printed circuit boards (PCB). The PbS/PbSe infrared detector performs well in a variety of industrial fields and applications, including spectroscopy, gas sensing, flame and spark detection, flame monitoring, medical devices, and IoT sensor systems.

Dr. Sebastian Valouch, Head of IR Sensor Development of trinamiX, said, “The Japanese market is one of the biggest in the world for high-tech products, such as infrared detectors, with many world market leaders in industrial monitoring, medical applications and consumer devices. We are excited to intensify our business in this important market.”

Hiroki Yamano, Manager, trinamiX Business Development Japan, Country Development, BASF Japan, said, “IR System has extensive expertise in the infrared technology as well as a sales network across a wide range of industries in the Japanese market. We are confident that we will expand sales channels to the Japanese customers through this mutual strengthened partnership.” trinamiX aims to further support customers in Japan through infrared detectors and related solutions.
