Contribute your expertise and come and work in research for the world's leading chemical company.

Today highly-complex tasks and questions in research and development cannot be solved purely through testing alone. Model-based, statistical experiment planning helps to carry out the right experiments with the optimum work effort. Here your expertise is in demand.

As a mathematician or bioinformatician in research and development you will work together with chemists, biologists, physicists and engineers on specific research projects. By using molecular modeling you will establish structure-property relationships to support the development of new high-performance polymers. Or you will be helping the researchers with scientific computing by optimizing laboratory experiments with mathematical models.

As a mathematics or bioinformatics student you have the opportunity to learn more about our research during an internship or final thesis. This internship will enable you to get a first practical experience in a leading international company. A skilled and committed research team awaits you and will help to ease your start. Your internship will certainly give you a valuable insight into BASF and our research.

Apply to one of our internship postings or send us your unsolicited application. We are looking forward to meeting you!

You are a mathematician or bioinformatics expert or you are studying computer science and have not yet finished your university studies.

You are open to everything that's new and enjoy scientific and technical questions which you approach with purpose and solve with your own creative ideas. Experienced colleagues will be there to support you. You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team and are also accustomed to communicate in English.

Spend 3 to 6 months with us, conducting research on a current question alongside our experts.

An internship is possible in one of our three global research units.

In Advanced Materials & Systems Research we create solutions with new functional materials and systems for the automotive, construction, electronics, detergent and cleaning agents, water and wind industries.

In Process Research & Chemical Engineering we develop new and improve existing processes for the manufacture of base chemicals, intermediates and fine chemicals. We are also seeking alternatives to the raw material of crude oil and we are working on energy conversion and storage.

In Bioscience Research we seek new ways of increasing agricultural productivity and meeting the need for healthy food using biotechnological methods as well as research in new crop protection products, making sure our solutions meet the highest standards in human and environmental safety.

The topics offered for internships, Bachelor's or Master's theses are just as varied as our research.

During your internship you will be working on a specific research project, such as one of the following:

  • Optimization of laboratory experiments based on mathematical models
  • Process and network design
  • Modeling of particles and their (optical) properties
  • Support of internal statistical optimization of application tests

In research and development you will find many other interesting tasks and topics. Your introduction will be "on the job" under the guidance of an experienced employee.

BASF offers you many opportunities to complement your scientific background with practical experiences. By completing an internship at BASF you will gain  insights into a globally operating company. Whilst with us you will learn from experts, create your own network within our interdisciplinary research community and lay the first foundations for your professional future. You will benefit from personal mentoring by highly-skilled experts.
