Shanghai and Zhanjiang, China – November 22, 2018 – BASF, one of the world’s leading chemical companies, will for the first time exhibit at the China Marine Economy Expo (CMEE) in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, including solutions for the sustainability of the marine economy as well as a range of innovations designed to enhance quality of life.
As the most comprehensive marine expo in China, CMEE aims to provide a platform to foster innovations and collaborations for the development of the marine economy as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. It also promotes new technologies and materials, especially for high value-added industries and service industries. Representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Guangdong Provincial Government, as well as the local and international enterprises, are visiting and participating in the Expo.
Dr. Zheng Daqing, Senior Vice President, Market and Business Development, Greater China, BASF, said, “The ocean is one of Earth's most valuable natural resources. Chemistry steps in here can help both in leveraging the ocean’s resources, and protecting people, cities and coastal infrastructure from the risks. Sustainability and innovation have been key factors in BASF’s success for more than 150 years: We not only act responsibly throughout our entire operation, but also provide solutions contributing to conserving resources, ensuring good nutrition, and improving quality of life.”
The innovations for marine economy showcased at BASF’s booth focus on solutions to secure coastal energy supply and protect marine ecosystems:
- A utility pole made of BASF PU composite material Elastolit® is very strong and flexible, with improved wind resistance by 2.5 folds. PU composite poles are approximately one-fourth of the weight of traditional poles, making them simpler and faster to install even in remote areas. The poles can withstand severe weather conditions such as typhoons, snow and other natural disasters.
- Elastocoast®, an intelligent coastal protection solution contributing to China’s Sponge City initiative. The water-permeable and porous structure prevents water from saturating embankments near the coast and rivers. Revetments with Elastocoast reduce the negative impact on marine ecosystems of concrete embankments and better protect the coastline from erosion and landslides.
BASF solutions from chemistry also supports a wide variety of areas related to the marine economy, such as thermal seawater desalination, water purification through ultrafiltration, waste water treatment to reduce pollution, and durable construction solutions that ensure life safety in case of severe weather or natural disasters.
In addition to these innovations, BASF also shared a range of solutions which are now being used both in coastal regions and in other areas around China. These provide a safer environment for children to play and study and support the development of a better quality of life in China.
- BASF’s advanced sports surface package, for the construction of high quality running tracks and playing fields, includes a safe and long-lasting solution based on polyurethane, bundled with a quality service control program to ensure a highest standard manufacturing and installation.
- Sunvue® lighting system reduces blue light ratios and shows the real color of objects with its super high color rendering index (CRI).
- BASF’s non-phthalate plasticizer Hexamoll® DINCH® is especially developed for applications with close human contact. It has been widely used in food packaging, medical devices and toys, further applications in flooring and walling materials
- BASF’s urban and rural pest control products include Pluresto® Aerosol, a powerful pressurized contact insecticide which provides quick knockdown and is effective on crawling and flying insects including mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches. Siege® cockroach gel is effective in controlling both nymphs and adult common cockroaches.
- BASF Haptex®, an innovative polyurethane (PU) solution, enables the production of synthetic leather without organic solvents. It is available for use in furniture, automotive, footwear and apparel applications.
- Flamenco® Summit Indigo 180H, by BASF Colors & Effects, provides vibrant color in cosmetics and personal care products.
- Sports wear, wristbands and shoes can be made from BASF advanced Elastollan® and Infinergy® thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials
- Omega-3 fatty acids are an important element for normal metabolism.
- Other consumer goods include memory foam pillows, mobile phone cases, and food packaging film made from BASF’s safe and sustainable materials.
At the exhibition, BASF also showcased best practices in environment, health and safety (EHS) measures. As one of the founding members of Responsible Care®, a voluntary initiative by the global chemical industry, BASF has been driving continuous improvement and achieve excellence in EHS and security performance in China.
