BASF receives prestigious innovation award for advancing sustainable vitamin production in Korea

Seoul, Korea — December 12, 2016 — BASF has been awarded the Porter Prize for Excellence in CSV (Creating Shared Value) for its innovative use of production residue in Korea. By upcycling the by-product of its vitamin B2 production, waste and emissions are effectively reduced. This prestigious award is presented to companies and institutions that implement effective strategies and activities to pursue both economic and social value.

The BASF production site in Gunsan, South Korea, produces vitamin B2 using vegetable oil and the fungus Ashbya gossypii. A high-density vitamin B2 fermentation residue (BFR) is generated during downstream processing.

“We have been searching for innovative ways to make the best use of the residue which was previously discarded. As a result, we integrated a new process for upcycling nutrients from the residue into animal feed mixing components that are offered to the local feed market in Korea,” said Stephen Crisp, Regional Head, BASF Animal Nutrition Asia Pacific.

“We are honored to be recognized with the Porter Prize award as this innovative solution not only conserves resources and minimizes waste treatment volumes, it also contributes to advanced sustainable production, while fulfilling stricter government waste disposal regulations” added Crisp.

The Porter Prize for Excellence in CSV which aims to promote shared value by recognizing economic and social problem-solving, was established in Korea in 2014 by Michael Porter, a professor from Harvard University, and Dong-a Ilbo (East Asia Daily newspaper) from the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies.
