BASF Kids’ Lab returns for 12th year in the Philippines
- BASF brings chemistry closer to students of Sulib Elementary School, Pangil, Laguna from July 21 – 22, 2016
- Partnership with Malayan Colleges Laguna to promote and generate interest in science and chemistry
Philippines – July 22, 2016 – For the 12th consecutive year, BASF continues to educate children on the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives through Kids’ Lab, a free and interactive chemistry educational program for kids aged 6 to 12 years. In partnership with Malayan Colleges Laguna, the event is taking place from July 21 – 22, 2016, bringing chemistry closer to students of Sulib Elementary School, a small school in Pangil, a 4th class municipality in Laguna.
“Chemistry helps us understand the world around us. It is a bridge between many scientific disciplines such as biology, physics, geology and environmental science. As science education is part of BASF’s social commitment, we want to inspire Filipino children to discover the world of chemistry through simple hands-on experiments that make science fun,” said Roy Comagon, Managing Director of BASF Philippines.
Guided by mentors who are the chemical engineering students of Malayan Colleges Laguna, the younger Grade 3 and 4 students of Sulib Elementary School, will perform four experiments: water purification, superabsorber, paper chromatography and slime.
“We are privileged to support BASF’s Kids’ Lab. This partnership is in line with our mission to provide a learning environment that will transform Filipino students into globally competitive professionals and to help address society’s problems through the expert application of knowledge,” said Engineer Dennis Tablante, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Malayan Colleges Laguna.
Through the water purification experiment, the young students will learn how chemistry contributes to keeping water resources clean, the importance of water resources, and the need to protect the environment by properly treating wastewater. In the superabsorber experiment, the kids will gain a better understanding of the use and importance of a BASF polymer in absorbing water. In the paper chromatography experiment, the students will uncover the mystery of color and learn one of the important separation methods using chemistry. In the slime experiment, the kids will learn about chemical reactions while playing with their own slime creations.
BASF Kids’ Lab began at BASF’s headquarters in Germany in 1997, and is currently conducted in more than 30 countries. First held in the Philippines in 2005, BASF Kids’ Lab has since provided more than 7,000 Filipino elementary students with the opportunity to perform simple and safe chemistry experiments designed to be both educational and enjoyable. Children have fun while learning and understanding the principles, applications, and various benefits of chemistry when applied to health, hygiene, nutrition and industry.
