BASF improves primary school learning environments in Taiwan with LED lighting renovation project

  • Donation of lighting tubes with new BASF technology creates a visually comfortable environment for school children
  • Volunteers complete installation at two schools with limited resources near BASF production site in Kuanyin

Taipei, Taiwan – December 28, 2017 – BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, has completed a renovation project at two primary schools in Taiwan that will help create a better visual learning environment for school children. Through the "Sunshine Lighting Project,” employee volunteers from BASF Taiwan donated and replaced about three thousand T8 fluorescent LED lighting tubes at the two primary schools, which are located in the Kuanyin District of Taoyuan near BASF’s production site.

The Sunshine Lighting Project is designed to provide a more comfortable visual learning environment for teachers and school children at primary schools with limited resources. 17 BASF employees, with the support of professional electricians, retrofitted classrooms, libraries, and administrative offices to provide a warmer, more natural light source while reducing energy costs for the school.

The LED lighting tubes use a technology newly developed by BASF to improve illumination and reduce energy consumption. Based on an immediate test at the site after installation, the average illuminance, measured at nine locations inside one of the classrooms, increased by 50% while the energy consumption compared to the previous lighting dropped nearly 50%.

"Quality lighting is essential for school learning environments. By improving the lighting in the classroom, we want to provide a more comfortable reading and learning environment for school children, and contribute to reducing myopia. At the same time, we have developed a technology that can reduce energy use and therefore environmental impact. We also encourage parents to choose proper indoor lighting for kids and pay attention to eye care," said Kin Wah Chay, Managing Director of BASF Taiwan.

BASF social engagement activities in Taiwan are designed to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4, “Quality Education.” BASF also has supported other education programs in Taiwan including BASF Kids’ Lab, a hands-on science workshop series for 6 to 12-year-old children, as well as Virtual Kids’ Lab, which offers a variety of interactive experiments via the internet.
