BASF’s Kids’ Lab inspires school children to explore the world of science
- Hands-on experiments allow children to understand the role of chemistry in daily life
- Raises awareness of environmental issues and sustainability among children
Taipei, Taiwan – July 1, 2019 – BASF will bring the fun and interactive science education program, BASF Kids’ Lab, to children in Taiwan. This annual program is taking place at the National Taiwan Science Education Center in Taipei on July 1 - 3 and at the National Science and Technology Museum in Kaohsiung on July 9 - 10. Nearly 1,000 primary school students will conduct three hands-on and fun-filled chemistry experiments under the guidance of instructors and BASF volunteers.
The experiments include:
"Ginger Milk Curd" experiment shows how protease in ginger reacts with soluble milk protein to cause milk coagulation when mixing hot milk with ginger juice.
"Sunscreen" experiment will help children visualize the effect of invisible ultraviolet rays (UV) and raise their awareness about potential skin damage from UV light. Children will make sunscreen themselves by mixing various ingredients.
In the "Keep Cool" experiment, children will understand how food refrigeration plays an important role during transport and storage to avoid large-scale food spoilage and food loss, thereby ensuring sufficient food supply for the growing population worldwide.
“BASF is committed to promoting science education among the younger generation. As part of our social engagement, BASF Kids’ Lab has been running in Taiwan for 13 consecutive years. This program gives children an opportunity to explore the magic of chemistry in their daily lives and understand how chemistry contributes to conserving resources, ensuring good nutrition and improving quality of life,” said Kin Wah Chay, Managing Director of BASF Taiwan.
Following the Kids’ Lab, children will have a chance to visit the BASF Kids’ Farm, which was initiated by BASF in Taiwan in 2010. The employees of BASF AgSolution Farm Pingtung will guide children to learn about plant diseases, insects, and weeds that farmers have to tackle when growing rice and fruit. BASF’s Kids’ Farm provides children a great opportunity to understand the hard work of farmers and the value of food resources, and therefore the importance of cherishing the food on their dining tables.
To let more kids enjoy the fun of chemistry, BASF also developed the “Virtual Kids’ Lab” that offers a variety of exciting and interactive chemistry experiments in English and Traditional Chinese. Under the guidance of the Kids’ Lab mascot, Dr. Bubbles, children can explore the world of chemistry anytime, anywhere.
About BASF Kids’ Lab Program
Education is the key to the future of our children, and it plays an important role in the development of society. With our Social Engagement Strategy, we want to open up learning opportunities and to encourage children's sense of discovery and teach good science methods and skills. This helps us to meet the challenges of tomorrow and to create a sustainable future.
The BASF Kids’ Lab program is an interactive, fun and free chemistry education program designed for kids aged 6 to 12 years to discover the world of chemistry through simple and safe hands on experiments. The program has been brought to more than 30 countries across the globe, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Singapore, India and Japan. It was established in 1997 in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The program came to Taiwan in 2007 and has benefitted more than 13,000 children since 2012. BASF Taiwan has been organizing the Kids’ Lab program at remote schools, and focusing in areas where there are less opportunities for students to actively participate in the science subjects.
