BASF leads the way in sustainable innovations at PU TECH 2025

  • Showcases range of advanced and high-performance solutions across various industries
  • Solutions demonstrate commitment to sustainability in how BASF’s materials are made, used and recycled
  • BASF at PU TECH 2025: Hall S2, Booth number S2A.15, at the PU TECH Exhibition, India Expo Center, Greater Noida, India, 9-11 April

Mumbai, India - April 2, 2025 - BASF leads the way in sustainable innovations for the polyurethanes (PU) industry at PU TECH 2025, with a range of advanced and high-performance solutions across various industries. BASF is enabling its customers’ green transformation by reimagining how its innovative solutions are made, used, and recycled.

Material solutions made more sustainable with product design and manufacturing process

BASF collaborates with customers to produce PU solutions in a more sustainable way – whether it be with product design, material choice or an optimized manufacturing process. At PU TECH 2025, BASF showcases

  • an automotive seat made of BASF’s innovative synthetic leather solution Haptex®, which has been proven to produce 52% less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional synthetic leather, with more than a 20% reduction in energy consumption when using 1KG of chemicals for synthetic leather production - predominantly due to eliminating the wet line from the production processes, which reduces 30% of water usage compared to usual solvent-based PU production methods.*

Material solutions enabling sustainable transportation and energy generation

Our solutions are a key part of society’s sustainability transformation, enabling sustainable transportation, energy generation and building insulation. Key highlights to be showcased at PU TECH 2025 for the USE phase include

  • a total solution photovoltaic (PV) frame, co-created with Jiangsu Worldlight New Material Co., Ltd. and made with an industry-leading total solution that combines PU composite with a water-borne coating solution, results in an 85% reduction in product carbon footprint (PCF) vs aluminum frames. When combined with the water-borne solution, the total solution is lighter weight and possesses superior insulation. Hence it is also more energy-efficient in use. Additionally, the exceptional adhesion properties of the waterborne coating solution to PU composites significantly enhance weathering resistance, which translates to higher durability and a longer life span of the PV frame.
  • a spray transfer molding (STM) full plastic battery pack cover developed with Jiangyin Xietong Automobile Accessory Co., Ltd., where the PU glass fiber composite technology significantly reduces the battery cover's density and weight – which leads to energy efficiency of electrical vehicles when in use, and improves driving range. The material possesses superior strength and toughness, providing excellent protection for the battery cover.
  • Elastopan® Ultra portfolio demonstrates super lightweight high-performance materials tailored for rising athleisure segment.

Solutions enabling recycling of plastics waste into new, high-quality products

Plastic waste is recycled so that it becomes the starting point for new, high-quality products. With ‘Loop’, BASF introduces a range of PU solutions incorporating recycled content, market-ready and tailored for the footwear, automotive and synthetic leather industries in China. BASF, in collaboration with Autoliv China, a leading global automotive supplier for steering wheels, showcases steering wheels made with the foam solution containing recycled content at PU TECH 2025.

“Our showcase at PU TECH 2025 demonstrates how we are co-creating solutions that can transform the way we think about – and utilize – our PU materials. Our commitment is to fundamentally reinvent the entire lifecycle of our materials – and it’s a journey we need to take together with our customers – whether it be innovative solutions based on bio-based or recycled materials or optimizing production processes. Our newly opened Polyurethane Technical Development Center India will support the market development of these and other PU innovations in industries such as transportation, construction, footwear, appliances and furniture,” said Krithikumar Seetharaman, Director of Business Management, Performance Materials India.
