BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Mobilises 500 Volunteers to Restore Pahang's Coastline
Kuantan, Malaysia – Jul 12, 2026 – BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Sdn Bhd reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and community development through a coastal conservation initiative at Pantai Chendor, Pahang, bringing together more than 500 participants in support of a greener and more resilient future.
The programme brought together BASF PETRONAS Chemicals employees and their families, students and lecturers from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), stakeholders, and members of the surrounding community. The initiative featured mangrove planting, a beach clean-up, and the release of baby sea turtles, underscoring the importance of collective action in protecting coastal ecosystems.
As part of the programme, participants planted 2,000 young mangrove trees comprising Rhizophora apiculata (bakau minyak) and Rhizophora mucronata (bakau kurap) under the guidance of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Pahang Branch. Mangroves play a vital role in strengthening coastal resilience, protecting shorelines from erosion, supporting biodiversity, and serving as important natural carbon sinks.
Located in Gebeng, Kuantan, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals has been part of the Pahang community for nearly three decades. The company has also supported mangrove conservation efforts for more than 20 years, reflecting its long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and the well-being of communities surrounding its operations. The initiative aligns with BASF PETRONAS Chemicals' purpose that "Chemistry Drives Sustainability", demonstrating how sustainability extends beyond operational excellence through meaningful partnerships and community engagement.
"We are encouraged by the strong support and participation shown during this initiative," said Tan Aik Meam, Managing Director of BASF PETRONAS Chemicals. "Our experience in mangrove conservation over the past two decades reflects our long-standing commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the communities around us. As a company deeply rooted in Kuantan, we believe sustainability goes beyond our operations. By working together with local communities, academic institutions, government agencies, and environmental partners, we can create meaningful environmental and social impact for future generations."
In addition to mangrove restoration, participants took part in a beach clean-up activity to help preserve the coastline, while the release of 150 baby sea turtles symbolised hope and the shared responsibility to protect marine biodiversity. The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Through continued collaboration and sustained environmental efforts, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals remains committed to creating positive impact beyond its operations and contributing to a more sustainable future for Pahang and Malaysia.
