Societal Engagement

As part of our sustainability commitment, BASF’s societal engagement contributes to the solution of relevant societal challenges for communities surrounding our sites and vulnerable communities worldwide. 

We regard societal engagement as an investment into the shared value for societies, the environment and business alike. Our activities are bundled in three main topics for a sustainable future: health, skills and resources. We base our societal commitment globally at all levels of the BASF Group on these focal points and invest financial contributions, expertise, time as well as the joint development of alternative local business models.

Recent projects

Young Voices for a Sustainable Future – Innovation Challenge for a Just Transition

The BASF and JA Junior Achievement “Innovation Challenge for a Just Transition” is an intensive workshop experience for students ages 15 to 20, with specific focus on underrepresented youth. Its focus is to further develop employment relevant 21st century skills like idea-generation skills and collaboration techniques. Students learn ways to establish innovative and potentially viable solutions by addressing current business and community related problems and challenges caused by climate change and the transition to a sustainable economy and society. Students should feel empowered to contribute to sustainable development in their communities and to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

 

BASF is proud to encourage youth contribution to sustainable development as well as contribute to better employability and improved quality of life for participants and their communities.

Enactus – Action with Africa

Enactus is a platform for teams of university students to take entrepreneurial action and apply business principles and innovation to advance the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and create a sustainable positive impact on people, planet and prosperity.

 

The Action with Africa Challenge promotes entrepreneurial leadership and innovative business ideas on the continent of Africa and aims at creating both jobs and positive SDG impact. The program enables high-potential Enactus student teams across the globe to scale their business ideas.

 

BASF is proud to foster the passion and the creativity of young entrepreneurs with the support of the overall program as well as the focus on SDG2 “Zero Hunger”.

The Business Commission to Tackle Inequality (BCTI) 
The Business Commission to Tackle Inequality (BCTI) is a cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder coalition of organizations and their leaders who have come together to put addressing inequality at the heart of business’s agenda for sustainable growth. The BCTI is coordinated and powered by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). BASF is one of more than 50 member organizations that work hand in hand to raise awareness on inequality, build a shared vision and coordinate action.
