Preserving Alcatraz Island for Future Generations

Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay has captured the imaginations of many as it has played an important role in the development of the West Coast of the United States. Consistently ranked as one of the top five landmark tourist destinations in the United States, Alcatraz is a draw for history buffs, bird watchers, arborists and adventurers captivated by the idea of an ‘inescapable’ prison.

Time marches on; however, some things stay the same. Just as the rainy, windy and sometimes severe weather on Alcatraz was a harsh environment for convicts incarcerated on the island, the salty marine air has proven to be extremely hard on the island's many historic structures. Corrosion has taken its toll and can be seen widely in the many steel reinforced concrete buildings on the island.
