BASF recognizes young Chinese scientists with CCS-BASF Youth Innovation Prize to cultivate the innovative power of the future
- Four scientists were awarded this year for their chemical research excellence

Qingdao, China – June 19, 2023 - BASF presented the 11th CCS-BASF Youth Innovation Prize to four young Chinese scientists at the 33rd Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) Annual Congress in Qingdao, Shandong Province acknowledging their outstanding achievements through new discoveries in chemical industry. Since the establishment of CCS-BASF Youth Innovation Prize in 2001, BASF has been committed to supporting and funding the important future innovators in China's chemical industry.
“Innovation is the fundamental driving force behind the development of chemistry and the key is about the excellent scientific talents. Among them, the outstanding young scientists are the driving force of innovation. BASF established CCS-BASF Youth Innovation Prize with the aim of enabling more young scientists with innovative thinking and first-class academia and scientific research to stand out and contribute to the future development of chemistry in China,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lou, President and Chairman of BASF Greater China.
Four awardees were selected by a committee, which is comprised of renowned Chinese scientists and evaluates candiates every two years. Over the past 20 years, more than 300 scientists have applied and awarded 44 outstanding young Chinese scientists. Their innovations in the fields of petrochemicals, polymer materials, fine chemicals, surface and colloidal chemistry, and bioengineering have driven the development of chemical industry in China.
A total of 35 young Chinese scientists entered the judging process this year and the jury was very impressed by their academic achievements in their respective fields. Four awardees who stood out from the rest are Fan Jiangli from Dalian University of Technology, Li Feng from Jilin University, Xing Huabin from Zhejiang University and Zhu Shoufei from Nankai University.
- Fan Jiangli focuses on the regulation of the energy release in excited state of dyes, created fluorescent functional diagnostic dyes, and contributed to the development of China in vitro blood diagnosis.
- Li Feng proposed and verified the new concept of organic electroluminescence of doublet exciton emission, and opened up a new field of free radical open-shell molecular electroluminescence.
- Xing Huabin focuses on property regulation and selective recognition enhancement of ion-functionalized materials, developed a number of separation technologies for structural analogs and realized industrial applications.
- Zhu Shoufei pioneered a new direction of catalytic hydrogen transfer, established new reactions and strategy for hydrogen transfer, and promoted the progress of hydrogen transfer research.
