Overspray
Defect Description
Most commonly, the transfer of paint spray from one car body to an adjacent car body in a production line. This often results in basecoat color contamination of dried paint particles onto the adjacent car body. . Finish may be multi-colored, hazy, or rough to touch. Fine dry atomized spray droplets from the painting process stuck to the surface, or droplets that have not been absorbed by the paint film.
Often results in “pink” white job parts or metallic flakes in solid colors. Can also look like dirt particles. If this overspray defect is observed on the same car body, then it is called underspray if it is under the above layer or overspray if it is over the paint layer.
.
Also known as: Underspray, Overspray
Possible Causes of Defect
1. Car body spacing is too close in the production line.
2. Fast (or increasing) production line speed can lead to this problem
3. Imbalance of air in paint booth
4. Incorrect painting path and overlap
Tips to Avoid Defect
-
1. Check car body spacing for the given line speed.
2. Validate any changes in line speed.
3. Check booth balance
4. Verify painting paths, overlap and trigger points
5. Check the colorcoat purge cycles between colors as this can also transfer paint particles
