Ludwigshafen

R&D in Ludwigshafen

Ludwigshafen is the largest site within the BASF R&D Verbund, hub for the region Europe and headquarters of Process Research & Chemical Engineering platform.

Cathode active materials usually consist of mixed oxides. In the first step of the synthesis, various metal salts are precipiated using sodium hydroxide.

Our physical laboratory scientist examines a sample he took from the fully automated sampler. By means of analytical methods, he can determine the particle size distribution of the sample, which significantly influences the properties of the product.

Succesful research combines markets impulses with scientific insights. The organization of research at BASF within the Verbund is completely focused on this task. Through collaborations with universities and research institutes, joint ventures with highly specialized high-tech companies the company gets access to new knowledge and new technologies.

We arranged the central research divisions Process Research & Chemical Engineering, Advanced Materials & Systems Research, and Bioscience Research into three global platforms each headquartered in one of the regions particularly significant for us: Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. Within this global Know-how Verbund we create market-relevant innovations quickly and efficiently.

The research site Ludwigshafen bundles numerous competencies with research focus areas such as: process engineering, new materials and systems, catalysis, analytics, material physics, structural and coating materials, dispersions, additives, toxicology, ecology, performance materials, care materials, formulations, simulation and modeling, white biotechnology a.s.o.

The new Supercomputer
Since August 2017, one of the world’s largest Supercomputers for industrial chemical research is located at the Ludwigshafen site. The Supercomputer called "Quriosity" enables BASF researchers to very efficiently investigate complex questions and it further shortens the time it takes to launch new products.
