Who owns BASF?

With around 900,000 shareholders, BASF is one of the largest publicly owned companies with a high free float. An analysis of the shareholder structure carried out end of December 2025 showed that, at around 23% of share capital, the United States and Canada made up the largest regional group of institutional investors. Institutional investors from Germany accounted for 5%. Institutional investors from the United Kingdom and Ireland hold 7% of BASF shares, while investors from the rest of Europe hold a further 10% of capital. Institutional investors from the rest of the world, including the Asia Pacific region, hold 3% of BASF shares. Approximately 45% of the company’s share capital is held by private investors, nearly all of whom reside in Germany. BASF is therefore one of the DAX 40 companies with the largest percentage of private shareholders.

Does BASF currently have a share buyback program?

In view of cash proceeds already received and further proceeds expected, particularly from portfolio measures, the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE has resolved on a share buyback program on October 28, 2025. The program, which has a volume of up to €1.5 billion, is scheduled to start in November 2025 and be concluded by the end of June 2026. It is part of the share buyback announced at the Capital Markets Day in September 2024, with a total volume of €4 billion until the end of 2028. BASF SE will cancel all repurchased shares and reduce the share capital accordingly.
