Development of Novel Omega-3 Products

Research over the past 30 years has established the importance of omega-3 fatty acids, both for maintenance of health and in treatment of diseases.

The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are closely linked to the dose and absorption. BASF has been a pioneer in the production of high-concentrate omega-3 fatty acids and simultaneously minimizing the levels of contaminants and environmental pollutants.

Lately, our R&D team has focused on increasing the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids. Since they are often poorly absorbed by the human body, significant health benefits can be achieved upon increasing bioavailability of the product.

The process of developing a novel product includes extensive preclinical research, exploring and testing a wide range of formulations targeting specific biological needs. Novel products are tested in randomized, double-blinded clinical studies designed to mimic an everyday situation for healthy humans.

The R&D team and collaborators


A strength of a large multinational company is the possibility of bringing knowledge together. The profession of our R&D team covers physiology, pharmacy, pharmacology, toxicology, molecular biology, analytical chemistry and business development. All the team members have several years of experience from the corporate industry and/or academia.

Within BASF, we collaborate with several R&D teams in our Nutrition & Health Division, i.e. Human Nutrition and Pharma solutions. In addition, we have tight collaboration with other omega-3 departments like Consumer Healthcare, Quality Management Omega-3, IP Management, Global Marketing Pharma Omega-3 and Omega-3 Value Chain.

From a base of science, we drive innovation together developing growth drivers for our business. Our focus is omega-3 products for pharma applications and as nutritional supplements. The aim is that our products are sustainable, ensure better nutrition and improve quality of life.

Product Stability

The safety evaluation of a product for human consumption is important, independent of pharma or nutrient intension. We produce highly purified fish oil concentrate with minimal amount of pollutants. In addition, it is crucial to minimize oxidation throughout production and storage. Lower oxidation secures maximal quality of the product until end of shelf life.

Due to the formulation of the omega-3 concentrate, some of the traditional analytical methods used for oxidation testing of marine oils is not usable. Consequently, we have developed and optimized product specific methods and we are now running long-term stability programs for all novel products.
