We work globally in interdisciplinary teams. Our knowledge and competence centers consist of three central research areas. In conjunction with the development units of our corporate divisions BASF New Business and BASF Venture Capital you will form the core of our worldwide knowledge verbund. Across the world more than 10,600 employees work in different specialist areas at around 70 sites in our research and development units. Intensive cooperation partnerships with more than 600 excellent universities, research institutes and companies provide new impetus to our research.
As a researcher with professional experience you will typically join us an expert in one of our three research centers: Advanced Materials & Systems Research, Bioscience Research or Process Research & Chemical Engineering – with immediate project or management responsibility, depending upon your experience.
Our operational units with their application technology research are also always looking for new colleagues with professional experience.

As a natural scientist you have successfully completed your studies with a PhD and have already acquired several years of professional experience in the chemicals industry or in one of our customer industries.
You are open to everything that's new and enjoy scientific and technical questions which you approach with purpose and solve creatively with your own ideas. You have proven experience in project management and you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment. You also understand exactly how to lead a team to achieve the best results.
You can communicate self-confidently and convincingly in English and you see business travel as an opportunity to further develop your linguistic and intercultural skills.
You will start in one of the three global research areas:
- In Advanced Materials & Systems Research we create solutions with new functional materials and systems for the automotive, construction, electronics, detergent and cleaning agents, water and wind industries.
- In Process Research & Chemical Engineering we develop new and improve existing processes for the manufacture of base chemicals, intermediates and fine chemicals.We are also seeking alternatives to the raw material of crude oil and we are working on energy conversion and storage.
- In Bioscience Research we seek new ways of increasing agricultural productivity and meeting the need for healthy food using biotechnological methods as well as research in new crop protection products, making sure our solutions meet the highest standards in human and environmental safety.
University graduates with several years' professional experience can expect demanding tasks in research and product development with a high level of personal responsibility, for example in analytics, applications engineering and patents. From the outset you will be collaborating scientifically in a specific research project.
Your task is project management with regular commercial evaluation of the research project entrusted to you together with the registration of patents.
An essential part of your work will be intensive collaboration with internal partners from research and development, marketing and production in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams. You will also support international research collaborations, depending on the project or you will be running a team.
You will receive on-the-job training in a committed, competent team.
In addition to a scientific career as an expert in research, development opportunities in other areas such as product engineering, applications engineering, marketing, product management and production are also open to you.
You will have the chance to discuss your next career steps regularly with your supervisor.
Many continuing education and training measures such as seminars or "on-the-job" training will support you in your plans and you will further consolidate your competencies through special programs and continuing education measures. These also include the close exchanges within the ‘Specialist Communities’ inside and outside of BASF.
