BASF’s SLENTEX® high-performance insulation material used in eco-friendly cold chain platform by FMS Korea helps keep food fresh

  • SLENTEX® high-performance insulation material ensures freshness of food across the entire distribution process
  • The innovative material solution significantly reduces packaging thickness of delivery boxes and storage containers
  • Robust and reusable material improves eco-efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the cold chain delivery platform

Seoul, Korea – September 7, 2020 – ‘Delivery system without the use of secondary disposable packaging materials for distribution and logistics’, a pilot project run by the Ministry of Environment and local authorities, has introduced a cold chain delivery platform solution, aimed at reducing packaging waste for fresh foods. The cold chain delivery platform, developed by FMS Korea, a leader in cold chain systems, is based on a share-and-recovery system that utilizes reusable delivery boxes and shared storage containers made with BASF’s SLENTEX®. This new generation of high-performance insulating material is flexible, non-combustible, and breathable. It ensures consistently low temperatures within the delivery boxes and storage containers and therefore freshness of food across the entire distribution process.

Further, compared to conventional materials, SLENTEX can reduce packaging thickness by 50-70%, owing to its excellent insulation performance. This enables delivery companies to transport more fresh food, as well as reduce the number of road trips required, and accordingly the energy needed for transportation.

“The co-development with FMS is a great opportunity to demonstrate SLENTEX’s high-performance insulation properties, which contributes to its eco-friendliness in an extensive range of applications,” said Manfred Pawlowski, Vice President
Global Business Incubation, Performance Materials, BASF.

Thanks to the robustness of SLENTEX, delivery boxes and shared storage containers can withstand handling over many distribution cycles. This further enhances eco-efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the cold chain delivery platform solution across the supply chain.

“Korea’s delivery market has created substantial packaging waste due to frequent over-packaging to protect products and maintain freshness. Our cold chain delivery platform consists of a reusable solution and high-quality refrigerated vehicles and cold stores, using BASF’s high-performance SLENTEX insulation material solution. This helps us minimize the environmental impact of cold chain packaging and transportation, as well as lowering operating costs,” said Dong-Ho Choi, CEO of FMS Korea.
