BASF unveils innovative raw materials for furniture and flooring coatings at the European Coatings Show

  • The comprehensive BASF portfolio provides customers with a complete toolbox of solutions for their current and future needs

Between 19 and 21 March, BASF will be presenting its broad portfolio of state-of-the-art products for furniture and flooring coatings at the European Coatings Show 2013 (ECS) in Nuremberg. At stand 523/525 in hall 7A, experts from BASF will provide details of BASF's range of innovative pigments, pigment preparations, resins and additives.

In the furniture and flooring industry, coatings are used to protect and provide visual effects for wood-based furniture in kitchens, bathrooms, sitting rooms and bedrooms as well as many different types of flooring such as PVC, laminate or luxury parquet flooring. The increase in demand for a global reduction in VOCs is driving the shift from solvent to water-based coatings without compromising product properties. As a consequence, raw materials for sustainable coatings must meet requirements as to low or no levels of VOC and combine quick drying times and toughness with a high resistance to scratches and abrasion. With its expertise BASF is tackling the technical requirements of modern wood coatings.

Bringing out the natural beauty of wood

Laromer® UA 9095 is BASF’s latest addition to water-based UV-curable dispersions. It is suitable for many applications, but it is particularly appropriate as a primer or topcoat to be used on furniture and flooring. With its high transparency and good grain enhancement, Laromer® UA 9095 is the ideal product to increase the vibrancy of the natural wood colors. It also boosts high chemical resistance, good adhesion to floor surfaces especially PVC, good abrasion resistance, little yellowing and great clarity in matt coatings. Beside these beneficial properties, Laromer® UA 9095 is perfectly compatible with many dyes and is a perfect binder for UV curable stains.

Colors for a fashionable house

BASF offers the most complete range of high-performance pigments for both PVC and laminate floorings. Microlith® pigment preparations are especially suitable for use in coatings for PVC floors as they consist of organic and inorganic pigments encapsulated in a resin carrier with a very small particle size. These products are very easy to incorporate into the manufacturing process of coatings, making them ideal for use with water- and solvent-based coatings and UV-curable coatings.

As BASF's pigments and dyes are available in many colors and shades, it is possible to create a whole array of desirable colors and effects for furniture and flooring, including imitations of rare and exotic woods and natural-looking stone. For example, BASF's Orasol® dyes and Microlith® pigment preparations are used to formulate high-performance wood stains with high brightness and excellent coloration properties. Meanwhile, the transparent iron oxides and carbon blacks within the Xfast®, Luconyl® NG and Sicoflush® ranges provide the perfect solution for the industrial wood coatings market.

High-performance additives for water-based coatings

BASF has launched the Dispex® Ultra PX 4575 polymeric dispersing agent for water-based coating systems with a benchmark performance in inorganic pigments. It is a complementary product of Dispex® Ultra PX 4585, which was designed for use with water-based coating systems that utilize organic pigments and carbon black.

Both polymeric dispersing agents benefit from BASF's Controlled Free Radical Polymerization (CFRP) technology, which allows high levels of control over the polymer structure. Offering benchmark performance and excellent pigment concentrate viscosity, these two dispersing agents are ideal solutions for customers wanting formulations that are free of VOCs, the surfactant APEO (alkylphenol ethoxylates) and odor. Additionally Dispex® Ultra PX 4575 is compliant with the European Ecolabel for “indoor paints and varnishes”.
