Shanghai, China - December 20, 2023 - BASF and Shanghai Science & Technology Museum (SSTM) further strengthen their strategic partnership by renewing the Strategic Cooperation Framework Letter of Intent today. The renewal of the agreement signifies both parties’ commitments to leveraging their respective strengths for seamless collaboration and promoting science education among younger generations.

With the shared mission, BASF and SSTM have been co-organizing the Kids’ Lab program in Shanghai since 2005. The science education program, designed for school-age children is widely recognized by the public. To date, more than 90,000 children in Shanghai had experienced the Kids’ Lab program.

In 2018, the two parties signed a strategic partnership and since then have made considerable progress in resource sharing, staff exchanges, curriculum development, and public science education. With the renewal of the agreement, BASF and SSTM will extend their partnership to promote science education among teenagers, with the focus on chemistry education. At today's signing ceremony, BASF donated 300 science picture books, Cool the Planet – Lead a Low-carbon Lifestyle, to SSTM.

As part of this partnership, BASF will fully leverage its experience in chemistry science education to support the redesign of the Materials Exhibition Area at SSTM. This joint effort aims to creating a more innovative and interactive platform for science education.

“Science education enables the general public to keep up with the latest trends of science and technology. It is also an important way to cultivate future talents in scientific innovation. Together with BASF, we hope to create more hands-on opportunities for children with fascinating exploration experience such as walking into laboratories to see the latest scientific research results and learning more advanced cultural concepts”, said Xin Ge, Vice Director of Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.

“BASF recognizes the pivotal role of science education in empowering future generations, which requires a synergy of an exceptional learning environment and cross-sector collaboration,” said Priscilla Leung, Vice President, People Services Greater China, BASF. “Together with SSTM and other partners, we strive to integrate each other’s resources and foster strong coalition, to better support the growth of our future leaders and innovators.”

The partnership also covers a range of science education activities.

1) BASF Science Open Day: The two parties will organize visits by high school students to BASF sites in Shanghai. Students can learn about the daily work of researchers and gain a basic understanding of the chemical industry.

2) Chemistry-themed educational activities: SSTM will invite BASF scientists to be the museum volunteers. Through themed lectures, salons, seminars or guide tours, the volunteers can help the public better understand the contribution of chemistry innovations in the daily life and climate protection.

3) BASF Chemical Experiment Station: BASF and SSTM will co-work on a new series of chemistry experiments to support SSTM’s ongoing chemical educational programs. The course will be built upon BASF's curriculum resources developed by its headquarters in Germany, and its strong expertise in industrial manufacturing.
