BASF Kids’ Lab raises awareness on sustainability among children in Singapore
- Around 240 children attend Kids’ Lab to conduct experiment on plastic recycling and bioplastics
- Collaboration with community: part of Community Action Network initiative under the People’s Association Singapore and supported by student volunteers from National University of Singapore, Food Science & Technology Department
Singapore – June 10, 2024 – BASF Kids’ Lab, an interactive hands-on chemistry education program was held on May 31 to June 1, 2024, at Kolam Ayer Community Club. The annual program was part of the Community Action Network (CAN) initiative under the Project We Care organized by the People’s Association Singapore. CAN is a program that seeks to collaborate with corporate and the community for collective ground-up efforts to uplift the children from lower-income families. Over the two days, around 240 children including 40 children from CAN program attended Kids’ Lab.
Kids’ Lab is a global BASF program which has been held in Singapore since 2003. The initiative gives children aged 7 to 12 years old the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science and chemistry through interactive, fun and hands-on experiments. As part of company’s effort to raise awareness on how chemistry can contribute to sustainability among children in Singapore, which is also in line with the Singapore Green Plan and Forward Singapore Roadmap, children conducted experiments introducing the various properties of plastics, the importance of plastic recycling and bioplastics.
Together with employee volunteers, 18 student volunteers from the Department of Food Science & Technology, Faculty of Science at National University of Singapore guided the children through the experiments and activities.
“It is an honor to be part of the CAN program this year as we recognize the importance of working together with the community and partners to uplift the society. We also appreciate the continued collaboration with the student volunteers from the National University of Singapore,“ said Vimala Arumugam, Managing Director, BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd and BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. “Through our societal engagement efforts, we continue to create a sustainable future and provide quality education as part of our commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goals.“
