BASF’s leadership in water stewardship recognized by CDP

January 23, 2019

Worldwide, water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Water is of fundamental importance in chemical production: It is used as a coolant, solvent and cleaning agent, as well as to make products. The sustainable use of water and worldwide conservation of natural water resources are key to BASF.

CDP, a highly recognized international non-profit organization, has again acknowledged BASF as a global leader in sustainable water management. This includes assessment of the level of detail and comprehensiveness in a response as well as the company's awareness of water issues, management methods and progress towards water stewardship. Of the 2113 companies evaluated, BASF SE has received a score of A- which is within the Leadership band.

“Ensure access to water and sanitation for all” is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations and one of BASF’s strategic focus areas. BASF contributes to this goal through its water stewardship strategy to efficiently use water and to develop specific sustainable solutions for local water situations. This strategy and solutions include the quantitative, qualitative and social aspects of water use. BASF’s target is to establish sustainable water management at Verbund sites and sites in water stress areas by 2030. Water stress areas are regions in which more than 40% of available water is used by industry, household and agriculture.
