BASF supports China Science & Technology Museum’s exhibition celebrating 150th Anniversary of Periodic Table of Elements

  • The 1500-square-meter exhibition with 70 exhibits enables visitors to explore the magic world of chemistry
  • New exploration area in BASF Kids’ Lab offers immersive journey and interactive workshop about chemical elements
  • Bringing safe and fun chemical experiments to more than 196,000 kids in Greater China since 2002

Beijing, China – July 10, 2019 – In collaboration with BASF, China Science & Technology Museum (CSTM) today kicked off an exhibition, “The Periodic Law”, to celebrate 150 years of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. BASF’s Kids’ Lab will be fully integrated into this exhibition and offers safe and fun chemical experiments to children aged 6 to 12. BASF also runs the “Journey of Chemical Elements” and the “Elements Workshop” throughout the summer for visitors to learn and discover stories about chemical elements.

“The Periodic Law” exhibition is jointly hosted by CSTM and the Chinese Chemical Society. It occupies a floor area of 1,500 square meters and is divided into four zones displaying 70 exhibits. The interactive exhibition allows visitors to understand the history of human exploration of the universe, as well as the discovery of chemical elements. Visitors can also learn about the unique natures and extensive applications of chemical elements, and how they influence scientific research, production, and our daily lives. This exhibition will be on until the mid of August. Afterwards it will be on two-year tour throughout China.

“This exhibition is part of CSTM’s endeavor to present the latest technologies and hottest scientific topics to the public. Through a wide range of interactive exhibits, we want to inspire our visitors to think about how the periodic law and chemical elements improve our life,” said Yin Hao, Curator of China Science and Technology Museum and Party Group member of China Association for Science and Technology. “We are glad to have BASF’s Kids’ Lab which helps children explore the world of science through fun-filled and safe experiments.”

BASF Kids’ Lab first came to China in 2002. Since then, more than 196,000 children have participated in this signature science education program. “BASF’s Kids’ Lab lets children experience the joy of chemistry and discover its magic through hands-on experiments. Every summer, we strive to bring unique and new learning opportunities to children and parents,” said Joerg Wuttke, Vice President, Chief Representative of BASF China. “Circular economy and food nutrition are our focus topics this time. As part of the CSTM exhibition, we are expecting more visitors to come and explore, as Kids Lab will run for longer than it has in previous years.”

Meng Qinghai, Member of Secretariat and Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, attended the ceremony and announced the official opening of the exhibition.

The BASF Kids’ Lab experiments to be staged at CSTM include:

Poly Lab (45-min workshop, for 8 – 12-year-olds, July 17-21)

Plastics are efficient materials that can save resources and enable health, safety, and convenience benefits for society. However, it is important that plastics and their waste are used, disposed of, and recycled in a responsible manner. This experiment helps children discover the properties of plastics and know how to separate different types of plastics for recycling. They will also learn about the unique properties of corn starch liquid, which is a type of renewable resource that can be used to make plastics.

Clever Foodies (45-min workshop, for 8 – 12-year-olds, July 23-28)

The world is witnessing a significant rise in obesity and other forms of malnutrition1. This experiment aims to increase children’s dietary awareness and foster healthier eating habits. The workshop lets children analyze the substances contained in fruit and vegetables. They will learn to measure and compare vitamin C content in a variety of fruit juices, allowing them to gain a good understanding of the benefits of eating a colorful range of vegetables and fruit in their diet.

Elements Workshop (30-min workshop, for 6 – 12-year-olds, July 29 – mid August) Volunteer teachers will guide children to conduct an experiment using storytelling, so children can learn the theories behind and understand how they can be applied in everyday life. BASF also developed a portfolio of online learning resources to promote self-exploration outside the classrooms.

From early July to mid-August, Kids’ Lab will tour across China in partnership with various science and technology museums in Shanghai, Beijing, and Chongqing.
