BASF bakes up innovative ingredients for healthy indulgence at IFT 2012

Florham Park, NJ, June 7, 2012 – For the first time at the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) annual Food Expo, BASF Nutrition & Health is showcasing innovative food and beverage performance ingredients targeting formulators looking for the perfect combination of taste, structure, texture, volume, and shelf-life for a variety of applications. The IFT will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center from June 25 to 28.

BASF’s interactive display of ingredients at booth 1611 is just one facet of the company’s activities at IFT 2012 designed to create a fruitful open dialog with leaders in the food and beverage market.

“We invite IFT attendees to our booth to get better acquainted with our products, concepts and solutions so together we can develop ideas to meet consumer demand worldwide, including diverse cultures and eating preferences,” said Samy Jandali, Vice President, BASF Nutrition & Health, North America. “Busy consumers need innovative products that are not only fast and easy to prepare, but that taste good, too. These requirements place enormous demands on food manufacturers and we are here to help with customized solutions.”

Jandali explained that BASF offers a variety of additives that deliver a holistic product experience such as Lamequick® whipping agents and Spongolit® aerating emulsifiers.

Excellence in food technology

Lamequick whipping agents provide excellent taste and pleasant mouth feel in whipped desserts, cream fillings and cake decorating, ice-cream, and frozen desserts, and is made largely from mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In decorating creams, Lamequick provides sharp edges when piping, smooth texture for spreading, and stability for serving. In desserts, Lamequick creates a light and creamy texture. These spray-dried powders, when whipped up with milk or water, produce light and creamy foams.

Cakes can be produced faster and with consistent quality using Spongolit aerating emulsifiers. Used in whipped batters for a variety of cakes, Spongolit ensures excellent stability, volume and crumb structure. With Spongolit, all components may be added at the same time and whipped together. It is ideal for small bakeries, large-scale cake manufacturing, and home-use cake mixes. Spongolit is available as spray-dried powders.

Taste the advantage of BASF ingredients

In addition to Lamequick and Spongolit, BASF offers a broad portfolio of health ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids; vitamins A, B, D, E, and K; phytosterols; Tonalin® conjugated linoleic acid (CLA); and a wide range of carotenoids which can also be used as colorants.

To demonstrate BASF’s application expertise in customized solutions, attendees are invited to see and taste the advantages of BASF’s ingredients in these prototypes especially relevant for today’s consumer:

  • light and fluffy sponge cake bites with creamy frosting,
  • smooth and airy chocolate mousse,
  • tasty coconut water for body composition featuring Tonalin CLA,
  • delicious energy drink featuring caffeine, B vitamins and carotenoids,
  • heart-healthy ginger crisps with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D,
  • good-for-you gummies with phytosterols and lycopene, and,
  • toning Tonalin® CLA shots.

Jandali pointed out that BASF is committed to providing a platform for the exchange of valuable information to help meet current and future unmet nutritional needs, a major reason why BASF is sponsoring both the “Food, Safety & Defense” track and “Food, Health & Nutrition” track during the IFT’s Scientific Program.

“We must challenge ourselves to find new ways of thinking and new answers to tackle demands across the entire value chain,” said Jandali.

Attend traceability symposium

Along with making products nutritious, BASF is working with customers to make their products even more sustainable.  BASF’s “SET – applied sustainability” initiative offers an innovative approach for leveraging current and future sustainability opportunities.  To learn more, IFT attendees are invited to a special program (session 185) as part of the Food Safety track:

“Traceability: What Works and What Doesn’t” on Wednesday, June 27 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:55 p.m. in room N111.

Cristian Barcan, SET Manager in North American and Asia Pacific, will moderate the symposium comprising four presentations by Jennifer McEntire, Senior Director, Food and Import Safety, Leavitt Partners; Helge Kittelsen, Chief Executive Officer, TraceTracker Canada and Region Manager for North America; Ana Hooper, Vice President of Total Quality, Darden Foods; and Amanda Josey, Manager, Strategic Marketing and Business Development, Human Nutrition, BASF Corporation.

BASF will also build on the “Think Newtrition™” global market initiative launched last year at IFT.

“Interactive displays including iPads* will demonstrate how the Nutrition & Health team can use our unique ingredient and formulation expertise to create new products and improve existing ones as we support good health worldwide,” said Jandali.
