BASF announces expansion of Food Technology & Applications Center in North America

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, June 14, 2012 -- Innovation is the driving force behind BASF’s newly expanded Food Technology & Applications Center, which officially opened this week.

Located in Tarrytown, New York, the state-of-the-art facility is part of BASF’s 160,000 square foot research and development center which also is home to research laboratories for personal care and pharmaceutical applications.

“We welcome our customers and industry colleagues to our new kitchen where Newtrition® comes to life,” said Charles Barber, Technical Sales and Applications Manager, Nutrition & Health, for BASF in North America. “This is the birthplace for concepts and ideas that meet consumers’ demands for healthy, appealing, and convenient products. Consider it a culinary crossroads where science, technical and application support, and market research all come together.”

BASF’s Think Newtrition (www.newtrition.basf.com) marketing initiative describes how its unique ingredient and formulation expertise can help customers create new products and improve existing ones for a variety of market segments such as food, beverages and dietary supplements.

“We realize that identifying the right ingredient for a product is just one part of the process,” Barber said.  “In our center, we can eliminate the guesswork and perfect the formulation to help our customers efficiently market products that resonate with consumers. Whether it’s baking a cake with more volume, creating a nutrition bar with better texture and taste, or adding an appealing colorant to a beverage, we are your one-stop kitchen.”

BASF’s food scientists and technical specialists will offer workshops and on-site product demonstrations so customers can see and taste the advantages first-hand of using performance ingredients such as Lamequick® whipping agents and Spongolit® aerating emulsifiers.  On the health side, customers can collaborate with BASF experts to add “Newtrition” without adversely affecting the sensory properties of the products.

“Using our broad range of capabilities, the Tarrytown team is especially focused on finding new delivery forms for dietary supplements and innovating the next generation of snack foods, baked goods, beverages and dairy products,” Barber said.

This investment in North America is part of BASF’s overall strategy to provide customers with a global network of technical and application support. BASF also has nutrition ingredient technical centers located in Ludwigshafen, Germany; Illertissen, Germany; Ballerup, Denmark; Shanghai, China; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Jacarai, Brasil. In combination, this network offers an outstanding array of services on a worldwide basis with special attention paid to regional preferences and cultural differences.
