BASF unveils new solutions for thermoplastic polyurethanes at TPE TopCon 2012

WYANDOTTE, MI, September 5, 2012 -- BASF will showcase its newest thermoplastic polyurethanes at the 10th Annual Thermoplastic Elastomers Topical Conference (TPE TopCon 2012) Sept. 10 to 12, at the Hilton Akron Fairlawn in Akron, Ohio.

Visitors will learn about the company’s Elastollan® TPU portfolio – a versatile, high performance thermoplastic polyurethane that offers all-around security for wire and cable applications in the aerospace, automotive and industrial markets.

BASF will provide two interactive presentations: “Thermoplastic polyurethane solutions for improved heat performance,” and “Thermoplastic polyurethane solutions for low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) flame retardant cable applications.”

Key technology and innovative product highlights at BASF’s TPU booth will include:

  • Elastollan® 1185A10HFFR, a new low smoke, halogen free flame retardant TPU for high performance wire and cable applications.  A polyether-based TPU compound that complements the existing Elastollan FR TPU portfolio by providing more robust FR solutions, Elastollan 1185A10HFFR exhibits excellent abrasion resistance and toughness, very good low temperature flexibility, hydrolytic stability and fungus resistance.
  • Elastollan® 785A10HPM, a new, high temperature TPU for continuous use at 150°C in automotive and wire and cable applications. A high performance TPU that provides excellent performance at high temperatures while exhibiting improved compression set, excellent surface reproducibility and resistance chemicals and fuels,  Elastollan® 785A10HPM has multifaceted haptic possibilities that range from velvety to leather-like and is available in several hardnesses.

“TPE TopCon is not only the signature event for our industry; it also provides BASF with a great opportunity to showcase our newest TPU innovations for the aerospace and automotive sectors.  We take pride in showcasing a TPU product that helps plastics manufacturers differentiate their end use offerings and improves on end use consumer products,” said David Grimes, Business Director for Cellasto and TPU in North America.

BASF works closely with end use manufacturers and engineers to apply its innovative chemistry and product ideas to develop customized formulations for the most demanding applications.  Elastollan TPU is available in polyester, polyether, and specialty grades, with new grades that perform at long term temperatures up to 150º C, as well as new low smoke zero halogen flame retardant grades passing aggressive large scale flame tests.
