BASF raises $28,000 for American Heart Association at annual golf tournament

GEISMAR, LA, May 9, 2013 -- A record number of BASF employees and area business partners teed off at the 13th annual American Heart Association (AHA) golf tournament on April 12, 2013. Through the generosity of individual players and 22 corporate sponsors, the event raised $28,000 to benefit the AHA.

“This year’s tournament was a huge success. BASF employee volunteers have coordinated this event and raised more than $200,000 for the AHA over the past 13 years, said Monica Tureau, AHA / BASF Employee Volunteer Team Leader. “Most of the members of our team have been doing this for a number of years and we have a great time putting this together and supporting AHA.”

A total of 36 teams – the most participants in the event’s history – took part in this year’s tournament, which consisted of 18 holes of golf at Pelican Point Golf Course in Geismar. Local vendors and community partners supported the event and provided food, drink and door prizes.

“This day of golf is not only an enjoyable annual event, but it also supports an important local resource," said Lee Rayner, Heart Walk Director at AHA. “The money raised at this tournament goes to provide vital education, health care and research for the local community.”

While raising money for the organization, the event also raises awareness of how many Louisianans are affected by heart disease and related illnesses. According to the AHA, heart disease is the number one cause of death in Louisiana. Stroke is the number four cause of death and also responsible for being most debilitating.

“Events such as this golf tournament help the AHA promote lifesaving information. I am thankful for BASF’s commitment to the health of our community through their support of AHA,” said Rayner.
