BASF introduces EPD development service for concrete mixtures

CLEVELAND, OH – January 14, 2014 – The Admixture Systems business of BASF’s Construction Chemicals division today announces the launch of a third-party critically reviewed Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Manager tool for concrete.  This tool enables BASF to create customer specific EPDs for concrete to help communicate the environmental performance of their mixtures.

In addition to developing the EPD content through its EPD Manager tool, BASF provides a seamless process for the third-party critical review and registration of the final EPD document through the Program Operator. The final high-quality EPD can be submitted to architects and engineers.

Often compared to nutrition labels, EPDs are third-party verified reports published by product manufacturers that provide quality assured and comparable information regarding environmental performance of their products.  These declarations enable building designers to compare the environmental performance of products that fulfill the same function to make educated decisions about the products they use.

With its EPD development capabilities, BASF can help concrete producers meet LEED v4 requirements for the new materials and resources credit.

“We are excited to further support our concrete producer customers by providing a streamlined, technically advanced process to help them develop specific concrete mixture EPDs,” said Juan Alfonso Garcia, Vice President of BASF’s Admixture Systems business in North America. “Many of our customers may want to provide EPDs and better communicate and quantify the environmental impacts of their mixtures. This tool allows us to assist our customers through that process.”

The BASF tool has been independently verified by NSF International and complies with the North American Product Category Rules (PCR) for ISO 14025 Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) developed by the Carbon Leadership Forum.

The EPD Manager tool is the newest element of BASF’s portfolio of products and services for sustainable construction, including Eco-Efficiency Analysis. For more information, visit our website at www.masterbuilders.com.
