BASF Sultan™ miticide offers novel mode of action, receives U.S. EPA approval

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, June 17, 2014 – Ornamental growers now have a new class of chemistry for outstanding mite control. BASF today announced it has received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval of Sultan™ miticide – with active ingredient cyflumetofen – for use in greenhouses, nurseries, landscapes, and interiorscapes .

Sultan miticide offers growers:

  • rapid, targeted knockdown of all life stages of mites, with long residual control;
  • practically no toxicity to beneficial insects, including predatory mites and pollinators;
  • no observed phytotoxicity in ornamental species tested;
  • a new mode of action to combat cross-resistance with other commercial miticides;
  • a broad label for use in greenhouses, nurseries, landscapes and interiorscapes; and
  • compatibility with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

“With a quick reproductive cycle, a mite infestation has the potential to destroy an entire crop within weeks,” said Kathie Kalmowitz, Ph.D., Market Development Specialist, BASF. “Sultan miticide offers growers a powerful, targeted and novel tool needed to control mites quickly as part of a chemical program, or when used with beneficials as part of an IPM approach. Programs using biological controls can proceed without disruption while managing damaging spider mite populations.”

Sultan miticide will be used as a contact application to key ornamental mites in many annual and perennial crops, including foliage plants such as ficus and palms; woody plants such as hibiscus, butterfly bush and roses; and herbaceous plants such as marigolds, gerbera daisy and chrysanthemum.
