BASF donates environmental sampling equipment to University of Michigan
WYANDOTTE, MI, June 10, 2015 – BASF donated two sediment samplers to the University of Michigan Dearborn Campus to support ongoing field studies in the 300-acre Environmental Interpretive Center. This equipment will be used to sample the soils, plants, invertebrates and other types of aquatic habitats in the benthic zone at the bottom of the campus lake, as well as in the adjacent Rouge River.
The donation will allow University students taking courses in ecology, geology, and environmental sciences, as well as outreach programs at the Center, to gain valuable experience as part of their laboratory and field research projects.
Both David Susko, Ph.D., and Orin Gelderloos Ph.D., the current and former Directors of the Center, accepted the equipment from BASF.
"These specialized instruments, will allow us to examine habitats that are not easily accessible,” said Gelderloos. “We will be able to learn about the deep areas of aquatic habitats in addition to the shallow regions by the shorelines.”
“We thank BASF for its generosity and commitment to support environmental
research on our campus,” said Susko.
“This equipment will provide meaningful lab experiences for students to create chemistry for a sustainable future,” said Greg Pflum, Vice President and General Manager of BASF’s Midwest Hub. “We recognize the crucial role that the University of Michigan plays in preparing tomorrow’s innovators through science education to preserve and protect the
environment.”
