BASF awards $10,000 in scholarships to LSU engineering students

GEISMAR, LA, October 22, 2018 – Four engineering students attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge recently received $2,500 scholarships from BASF. This annual scholarship program is part of BASF’s education outreach and workforce development efforts in Louisiana.

Each student is recognized for maintaining excellent grade-point averages and being active in campus and community organizations. Scholarship winners are:

  • Abbas Al-Hassani, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Metairie, Louisiana where he was a National Merit Finalist while in high school at Haynes Academy. He is a member of the Bengal Reauxbotics team at LSU and participates in competitions with a thirty-pound combat robot.
  • Meredith Guidry, a sophomore civil engineering major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy. She serves on the Greek Board of Directors Fundraising Committee, is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, participates in the American Society of Civil Engineers, and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. In addition, Meredith is a Resident Assistant at the Laville Honors Residential College. She was awarded the President’s Honor Roll for the fall 2017 semester and is actively pursuing an honors degree from LSU’s Ogden Honors College. Her research in transportation gave her the opportunity to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in 2016 and 2017.
  • Emma Joslin, a junior chemical engineering major with a minor in chemistry. A graduate of DeRidder High School in DeRidder, Louisiana, she is a member of the Delta Kappa chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society.
  • Kelley Wieseneck, a junior mechanical engineering major from Mandeville, Louisiana who attended Mandeville High School. She is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and chairs the public relations committee. Kelley tutors other engineering students in physics and assists in a research lab. She has already gained experience through an internship at a refinery and is interested in pursuing a career in the energy industry.

"We are so appreciative of the investment BASF continues to make in our college and in our students,” said Judy Wornat, Dean of LSU’s College of Engineering. “Recognition of the work done by our students - in and out of the classroom - helps provide an important incentive to maintain a high level of excellence."

In addition to annual scholarships, the company sponsors a summer internship program. This past summer, 18 engineering interns from LSU worked at BASF’s Geismar site and received hands-on experience.

BASF’s manufacturing presence near LSU includes operations in Geismar, North Geismar, Zachary and Vidalia. These sites employ a workforce of nearly 2,000 people and invest approximately $300 million in Louisiana through annual payroll, purchases, taxes and charitable contributions.
