BASF and Total swing off with Miracle Match for Life Golf Tournament

Funds raised will provide lifesaving health services through three local charities

PORT ARTHUR, TX, April 22, 2019 – BASF and Total will host the 17th annual Miracle Match for Life Golf Tournament on Friday, April 26 at Bayou Din Golf Club to support three local charities – the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program and LifeShare Blood Centers.

The tournament will bring together hundreds of golfers and volunteers from BASF and Total along with spectators, and individuals who will benefit from the money raised at the event.

Miracle Match for Life was created in 2002 as a collaborative partnership between BASF and Total to help educate and promote awareness of the need for bone marrow donors, blood donations and cancer screening and prevention in Southeast Texas. Through 2018, Miracle Match for Life has raised more than $1.5 million.

“Giving back is a natural part of our work culture, and we are grateful for the continued support we receive from our employees who are always willing to give back to the communities where they live,” said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager for BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals in Port Arthur, Texas. “Being part of the critical services these charities provide is an amazing experience, and we look forward to our continued partnership.”

Miracle Match for Life places special emphasis on education and recruitment in African American, Native American and Hispanic communities, where donors and cancer screenings are especially needed.

“We are privileged to take part in an initiative that helps to raise awareness of medical needs within our communities,” said Total Port Arthur Refinery General Manager Bryan Canfield. “As in previous years, proceeds will support underserved residents in Southeast Texas and ensure they will receive lifesaving medical care.”

Thanks to donations and public awareness generated by Miracle Match for Life, the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program has been able to recruit more than 350,000 donors from the Texas Gulf Coast Region and Louisiana and expand vital cellular therapies for patients.

“Financial support from Miracle Match for Life has allowed us to facilitate more than 1,470 lifesaving marrow and stem cell donor collections, with our donors never incurring any expenses related to their donations,” said Hope Guidry-Groves, Program Director for the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program. “We plan to use 2019 contributions to fund the expansion of our apheresis collection center, which will help increase the collection of lifesaving stem cells our patients need.”

Miracle Match for Life also has made it possible for thousands of women and men to receive mammograms and prostate cancer screenings through the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program.

“We are deeply appreciative of the outstanding companies, sponsors and loving individuals who work so hard to ensure medically underserved men and women in our community receive lifesaving medical care,” said Regina Rogers, “Gift of Life” Founder and Chair. “Funding and awareness raised during Miracle Match for Life make an immeasurable impact on the scope of our organization’s mission to provide extensive cancer education and screenings throughout seven Southeast Texas counties.”

Miracle Match for Life also supports LifeShare Blood Centers, which provides blood components to 11 hospitals in eight Southeast Texas counties and requires approximately 30,000 donations annually.

“Miracle Match for Life helps us educate the community about the necessity for blood donations and donor,” said Brooke Hulett, Regional Director of LifeShare Blood Centers. "At times, it is difficult to maintain the blood inventory needed to meet the demand of hospitals we serve. Each day 100 blood donations are needed for area patients. Miracle Match for Life has been vital in promoting awareness of the need for donors.”
