BASF Kids’ Lab Camp at Beaumont Children’s Museum sparks excitement about science

BEAUMONT, TX, August 4, 2021 – Aspiring young scientists learned to formulate and create using chemistry at the BASF Kids’ Lab Camp hosted by the Beaumont Children’s Museum from July 26-30.

During the week-long camp, 32 children in grades one through five participated in a series of slimy, electric, colorful and fascinating experiments, while developing a basic understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Dedicated to supporting the next generation in the field, BASF employee volunteers led the experiments, creating an engaging and exciting environment for the kids.

“The BASF Kids’ Lab Camp included three experiments that gave the students hands-on learning experiences,” said Lihua Liu, Process Technology Specialist for BASF Agricultural Solutions. “The students experimented with kitchen chemistry and baking formulations, learned about the concept of polymerization from making slime and extracted DNA from a banana.”

“The kids learned that science is fun, and chemistry is all around us,” said Vivica Edwards, Industrial Engineering Intern for Turnaround Group on assignment at the BASF Port Arthur site. “They were able to see and understand why and how things react, and I loved seeing the reactions on their faces when the science made sense to them.”

BASF has been an active partner with the Beaumont Children’s Museum for six years and the company has sponsored the BASF Kids’ Lab Camp for four summers.

“The continued partnership between Beaumont Children’s Museum and BASF has opened opportunities for young minds to explore many exciting new investigations in the world of chemistry,” said Amanda Yarbrough, Executive Director of the Beaumont Children’s Museum. “The museum is thankful for access to share BASF’s Kids’ Lab with our community. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving, has enhanced the museum camp experience and helped us expand our chemistry initiatives to all of our programs year-round.”
