Functional packaging

Our Functional Packaging line includes resin solutions, emulsions, dispersions and additives for barrier coatings, heat-seal lacquers, pre- and post-metallization coatings and print primers. The Functional Packaging portfolio includes materials that can be formulated for many applications and performance attributes such as grease, moisture, water resistance, ink adhesion, heat-seal lidding, direct food contact, low migration inks and OPV, high gloss, printability, low VOC and low odor, styrene free or bio-renewal content.

Energy cure

BASF offers a broad portfolio of high performance, high quality oligomers, and reactive diluents for a wide variety of energy cure inks, overprint varnishes and coatings for UV/EB curing. Laromer® oligomers determine the main properties, such as flexibility, adhesion, hardness, chemical resistance, etc., of an ink or coating. Laromer® reactive diluents are primarily used to achieve viscosities suitable for specific applications and, with careful selection, will maintain the key properties of the formulation.

Energy cure oligomers and reactive diluents

Depending on end-use requirements, specific formulations will vary greatly.  For UV curable systems, the majority of formulation will contain one or more of the following components: oligomers, monomers, pigments and other additives, and photoinitiators.

Laromer oligomers

Oligomers are moderately low molecular weight polymers that determine the most basic properties (flexibility, hardness, gloss, adhesion, etc.) of any coating, ink, adhesive, or binder crosslinked by UV curing.  Within each Laromer oligomer functional group exists a variety of structural variations to modify physical properties: Laromer epoxy acrylate (EA) oligomers for hardness and reactivity; polyester acrylate (PE) for all around physical properties; urethane acrylate (UA) for flexibility, abrasion and exterior durability; polyether acrylate (PO) for viscosity; water-based acrylates (W) for viscosity, flexibility, and hardness.

Laromer reactive diluents

Monomers, primarily used as diluents for the acrylate oligomer to achieve vicosities suitable for typical application equipment, can be monofunctional or multifunctional. Like oligomers, monomers within each functional group exhibit a considerable range of performance characteristics. Laromer monofunctional monomers contain one reactive group and extend flexibility, slow cure speed and lower hardness. Laromer multifunctional monomers contain two or more reactive groups and impart a multitude of desired performances.

BASF products offer the possiblility to formulate different coatings for barriers

These products can be mixed and used in different formulations considering the properties that are required. That means a unique finished coating and the opportunity to expand offerings for paper and paperboard packaging.

The "Kenntnis/Wissenschaft/Science" consists of knowing which substrate, caliper, coat-weight, coating method (flexo, roto gravure, rod, curtain, knife, other), and if single or multiple layers will be applied, to determine which product to use. An excellent option for a low moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), moisture barrier, heat-sealable, global food contact compliant and low COBB.

An excellent option for grease and oil barrier up to 60°C in both flat and folded/creased paper and paperboard, heat-sealable and global food contact compliant.

What do we mean by repulpability and recyclability?

Good question!

Repulpability refers to the ability to convert paper back into pulp, whereas recyclability is generally about the capability of being processed into new paper or paperboard.

Now formulators can use Joncryl HPB solutions to create repulpable and recyclable packaging according to the Fibre Box Association (FBA) voluntary standard for corrugated boxes, internal lab testing, and third-party industrial testing.
