BASF in North America: A regional history

Eight years after BASF is founded in
Germany, the first United States-based
office opens on March 10, 1873, located
on Duane Street in New York City.

At the time, this represented
the largest investment a German company
had ever made in the U.S. Wyandotte was
an attractive acquisition because of its
strong position in polyurethane chemistry.
With the acquisition, BASF gained major
production sites in Wyandotte, Michigan,
and Geismar, Louisiana.

BASF makes three major acquisitions: Inmont
Corporation, for automotive refinish and
printing and packaging inks; American Enka,
for its fibers operations; and the Celanese
advanced composite materials business.
