BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals LLC awards $22,200 to 2013 Lamar University scholarship recipients
“The Lamar University scholarship program is an investment in the next generation of science and engineering leaders,” said Greg Masica, Vice President and Site Manager of BASF TOTAL. “These scholarships also provide opportunities in the community for students to get a high-quality education that will set them on the path toward rewarding careers.”
McCoy is a 2013 graduate of Port Neches Groves High School and attended the BASF Science Academy summer program in New Jersey last year.
“I was very appreciative for the opportunity to attend the BASF Science Academy, and now I’m even more thrilled to be receiving this generous scholarship from BASF TOTAL,” said McCoy. “I never would have discovered my love for chemistry if I had not attended the Science Academy, and now I have the chance to pursue my goals in chemical engineering.”
McMillian is a 2013 graduate of Hamshire-Fannett High School.
“I am very grateful to get an education where I will not only be able to support myself, but also contribute to the expanding industry in Southeast Texas,” said McMillian. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me because of this opportunity provided by BASF TOTAL.”
As McCoy and McMillian begin their collegiate journeys, 2009 scholarship recipients Long Ngyuen and Vaughn Ogrydziak have already accomplished four years of college and internships and share where they are now.
Since entering Lamar University in 2009, Ogrydziak has completed five internships, including intern assignments at BASF sites in Port Arthur and Freeport, Texas. After a full year of interning in 2012, he returned to Lamar for the 2012 fall semester and just completed a summer internship with the BASF Professional Development Program in Iselin, New Jersey. Ogrydziak plans to graduate from Lamar in May 2015 and is striving for an international assignment with BASF in 2014.
“Being a scholarship recipient keeps me in check every semester when I start school,” Ogrydziak said. “I see myself as a student ambassador of BASF, and since I’ve worked my way into their Professional Development Program, I have to hold myself to higher standards. I enjoy learning new things about BASF, and I want to earn my spot on their team as a full-time employee.”
Nguyen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in May 2013 and will begin working with a major chemical company in Port Arthur, Texas in its GRAD program. Nguyen will start his career as a process engineer at an ethylene plant for his first year.
“As a BASF TOTAL scholarship recipient, I had the opportunity to focus on school and participate in student organizations. I was able to graduate as the top chemical engineer in my graduating class. In addition, I was the President of Lamar University’s American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapter for the 2012-2013 school year,” said Nguyen. “These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support of BASF TOTAL.”
