BASF awards $10,000 in scholarships to LSU engineering students

GEISMAR, LA, October 28, 2019 – Four engineering students attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge recently received $2,500 scholarships from BASF. The annual scholarship program is part of BASF’s education outreach and workforce development efforts in Louisiana.

“BASF provides scholarships to LSU engineering students to support their educational endeavors, preparing them for careers in our industry,” said Jerry Lebold, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BASF’s Geismar, Louisiana site. “These students are the next generation of talent and we want them to be as prepared as possible to transition into the workforce.”

Each student is recognized for maintaining excellent grade-point averages and being active in campus and community organizations. Scholarship winners are:

  • Olivia Arcemont is a junior chemical engineering major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her academic career and is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Outside of school, Olivia is a painter by commission.
  • David Hutton is a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Metairie, Louisiana and is a graduate of Haynes Academy, where he was a National Merit Finalist. At LSU, he is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Society for Collegiate Scholars. David also serves as a math consultant for his high school alma mater’s PSAT, SAT and ACT prep courses, where he creates content to help students improve their standardized test scores.
  • Aubry Hymel is a sophomore chemical engineering major from Covington, Louisiana, where she graduated as valedictorian from Saint Scholastica Academy. She is an LSU President’s List scholar and a recipient of the President’s Student Aid award, which allows her to conduct research in a chemical engineering laboratory on campus. Aubry is a participant in the Society of Peer Mentors and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is pursuing her passion for languages with a minor in German.
  • Thinh Nguyen is a sophomore electrical engineering major from Harvey, Louisiana. He has challenged himself to be an engineer who will make the world a better place through hard work and self-determination. He is passionate about electrical engineering and loves finding solutions to complex problems.

"We are so appreciative of the investment BASF continues to make in our college and in our students,” said Judy Wornat, Dean of LSU’s College of Engineering. “BASF’s recognition of our students' work in and out of the classroom provides an important incentive for them to maintain a high level of excellence."

BASF’s manufacturing presence near LSU includes operations in Geismar and Vidalia. These sites employ a workforce of nearly 2,000 people and invest approximately $300 million in Louisiana through annual payroll, purchases, taxes and charitable contributions.
