Light up Curiosity: First-ever Kid’s Lab hosted at BASF Zhanjiang Verbund site in 2025
- Two new experiments on electrochemistry, exploring the chemical concepts behind batteries and various applications of electrolysis
- Meaningful engagement with the local community in Zhanjiang
Zhanjiang, China – August 13, 2025 – Today, BASF’s widely-loved Kids' Lab program for the first time takes place at Zhanjiang Verbund site, also marking its third consecutive year in Zhanjiang. This year, BASF introduces two new experiments, “The Secrets of Batteries” and “The Magic of Electrolysis”, helping children understand the chemical reactions behind batteries and explore the various applications of electrolysis. During the five-day program in Zhanjiang, around 1,000 children aged 6 to 12 from across the city will delve into the fascinating world of chemistry through interactive and safe hands-on experiments.
"Hosting Kids’ Lab at our Zhanjiang Verbund site for the first time highlights our commitment to grow hand-in-hand with the local community", said Marko Murtonen, Senior Vice President, New Verbund Site China, BASF & General Manager, BASF Integrated Site (Guangdong) Co. Ltd. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are dedicated to building meaningful connections in the communities where we operate, and programs like Kids’ Lab exemplify how we can make a positive impact together."
This year, BASF Kids’ Lab’s journey continues in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Beijing, Zhanjiang, and Shanghai, attracting children from different cities to learn through customized and fun experiments. The program will also feature interactive displays exploring the history of different batteries and their applications in daily life, helping children map out the science behind and the connections between electrochemistry and daily life.
2025 marks the 140th anniversary of BASF in Greater China. As BASF continues to “Go far on our winning ways” in the country, the company actively promotes science education among children and raises public understanding of the chemical industry. For more than 20 years, the BASF Kids' Lab program has created lively spaces for over 210,000 school-aged children in Greater China to foster curiosity and exploration.
The experiments at the 2025 BASF Kids’ Lab in Zhanjiang are:
The Secrets of Batteries (45 minutes, for children aged between 6-12)
The primary cell is the basic model for almost all batteries. It generates an electric current through the migration of electrons between reactants that occurs in a redox reaction. It generally consists of a positive and negative electrode with an electrolyte. But what does it take to light a bulb? In “The Secrets of Batteries” experiment, volunteers will guide children to choose the appropriate electrode material and electrolyte to build a primary cell. Children will feel the thrill of lighting up a small light bulb, and cherish the hard-won electricity.
The Magic of Electrolysis (45 minutes, for children aged between 6-12)
Electrolysis is a magical process where electrical energy is applied to trigger chemical reactions. It is used in a wide range of applications such as electroplating and the electrolysis of water to produce oxygen and hydrogen. In “The Magic of Electrolysis” experiment, children are encouraged to observe the electrolysis reactions taking place in various electrolytic solutions, and learn to grasp basic chemical concepts such as electrolytes and electrolytic reactions.
