BASF launches state-of-the-art sports nutrition ingredient in China to support active lifestyles

  • PeptAIde™ helps modulate inflammation for post-workout recovery; contains a unique set of plant-based peptides identified using artificial intelligence
  • Wide range of innovative, high-efficacy prototypes to support health trends in China
  • Personalized heart health assessment offered, through the measurement of vascular stiffness
  • BASF at Food Ingredients China (FIC): March 18-20, 2019, National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECCS, Shanghai), Hall 5.1, Booth 51N66/51O67

Shanghai, China – March 11, 2019 – A new sports nutrition ingredient from BASF, PeptAIde™, will help consumers in China maintain active lifestyles by modulating inflammation in post-workout recovery. BASF will launch PeptAIde and a range of other nutritional health solutions at Food Ingredients China 2019, in line with increasing interest in healthy living in China.

The Asia Pacific sports nutrition segment is experiencing double digit growth annually1. In China, year-on-year market growth in value in 2018 was 42%, and total market size exceeded CNY 2.1 billion2. A consumer research project3,4 commissioned by BASF showed that more active consumers – and not just professional athletes – are seeking innovative, plant-based solutions to help manage sports-related inflammation.

As part of the collaboration between BASF and Nuritas™, a startup based in Ireland, artificial intelligence was used to discover a new generation of bioactive peptides unlocked from brown rice protein.

“We are committed to providing the right nutrients to the right people at the right time,” said Haibo Tian, Regional Sales Head, Human Nutrition Asia Pacific, BASF.  “China continues to be at the forefront of innovation in the health space, making it an ideal market for BASF to launch PeptAIde, to drive sports nutrition to the next level. BASF has the exclusive license to commercialize this breakthrough ingredient globally.”

Inflammation is a key concern of active consumers as it can restrain or restrict physical activity. Inflammation is regulated by the secretion of a complex network of cytokines, which contribute to the body’s fundamental response to injury and regulate recovery. BASF research indicates that PeptAIde modulates inflammation, potentially supporting physiological benefits after exercise.

On-the-go sports nutrition is gradually gaining prevalence, especially among millennials, in convenient options such as protein bars. In line with this growing trend, a PeptAIde sports bar will be showcased for the first time at FIC 2019.

In addition, other innovative prototypes that address varying health-related concerns will be presented:

  • Active Mobi-lite”, a high-efficacy powder supplement fortified with conjugated linoleic acid, vitamins D and K and omega-3.  Delivered in a ready-mix sachet format, consumers can enjoy a beverage that aids the maintenance of muscle mass, bone density and supports joint health for adults and seniors.
  • “Bright-eye” effervescent tablet with lutein ester. Supplementation with lutein increases macular pigment optical density (MPOD). Macular pigment acts as a blue light and UV light filter protecting the retina against oxidative damage.
  • “Daily Defence” antioxidant capsules containing BASF’s algal source natural carotenoids harvested from open-air lagoons in Australia. It supports immunity and provides protection against environmental aggressors.

For the first time, visitors to the BASF booth can get a complimentary on-site assessment of their heart health by measurement of the aortic pulse wave velocity (AoPWV) using a simple, non-invasive device. The quick test will provide a reading of internal age versus actual age based on vascular stiffness. Other personalized nutrition analyses include the MPOD eye test, which provides measurement of macular pigment optical density, and the omega-3 index test to assess the omega-3 status in the body through dried blood spot technology.

Also at FIC 2019, BASF’s aroma ingredients division will present a range of products to the fragrance and flavor industry.
