BASF kicks off 2023 nationwide employee clean-up campaign for a cleaner planet
- Active participation of over 500 BASF employees and their families in 11 cities across the country
- trinamiX GmbH, a BASF subsidiary, contributed a portable Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for sorting and recycling of plastic waste
On the occasion of 2023 World Cleanup Day, BASF kicked off its annual nationwide employee cleanup campaign. On September 24, BASF collaborated with the NGO partner Pickup China, and conducted a cleanup event in Chongming, Shanghai, where the company’s Greater China Headquarters is located, attracting nearly 150 BASF employees and their families.
In line with the company’s commitment to sustainability, BASF’s 2023 nationwide cleanup campaign will attract the active involvement of over 500 employees and their families from 11 cities including Shanghai, Changsha, Guilin, Korla, Nanjing, Pinghu, Rudong, Shenyang, Shizuishan, Taipei and Zhenjiang.
“Plastic is a valuable resource, which should not be disposed at the environment. As a responsible corporate citizen, BASF is pioneering innovative technologies to optimize the plastic journey from ‘make, use and recycle’ and promote a circular economy, thereby reducing waste of resources and mitigating the environmental impact of plastic waste,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lou, President and Chairman of BASF Greater China. “This year, I am very proud to join the clean-up campaign together with my colleagues from all over the country, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable planet.”
At the event in Shanghai, trinamiX GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF, showcased its mobile Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy designed for plastic sorting and recycling. This compact yet powerful device is capable of identifying over 30 types of plastic materials, such as PE, PP, PVC, ABS and PA, enabling a higher efficiency of plastic waste sorting and making a substantial contribution to environmental conservation and sustainability.
As of September 24, the nationwide cleanup campaign has cleared approximately 1180 kilograms of waste from riverbanks, beaches, mountains, and city streets, including large amount of low-value plastic foam, water and beverage bottles, food takeaway containers, and metal products. All the waste has been sorted out properly to improve recycling literacy.
Ending plastic waste in the environment is a complex challenge that requires collaboration of all stakeholders in the private and public sectors. BASF co-founded the global "Alliance to End Plastic Waste" (AEPW) with nearly 30 companies in 2019 to advance solutions that reduce and eliminate mismanaged plastic waste. As part of its commitment to AEPW, BASF supports AEPW’s Clean4Change campaign, a global initiative to remove litter from the environment.
In Greater China, BASF organizes the employee volunteering cleanup campaign every year to encourage employees to make collective efforts on fulfilling the commitment to reducing plastic waste by cleanup with their own hands, contributing to raising environmental awareness and cultivating sustainable lifestyles.
