BASF wins multiple international awards in the personal care industry
- Emulgade® Verde 10 OL awarded as “Best Emulsifier” at the Shanghai PCHi Fountain Awards
- Four personal care ingredients recognized during in-cosmetics Global with the Kenvue Trusted Science Award and BSB Innovation Awards
SHANGHAI, China – June 4, 2024 – BASF's Care Chemicals division has been widely recognized with several awards from the personal care industry for its outstanding innovation, research, and development capabilities. These are important parts of its initiativeCare 360° – Solutions for Sustainable Life.
New emulsifier awarded at the Shanghai PCHi Fountain Award
In March, BASF received the Fountain Award in the “Best Emulsifier” Category at the 2024 Personal Care and Homecare Ingredients (“PCHi"), which paid recognition to the outstanding performance of BASF's green emulsifier Emulgade® Verde 10 OL in the field of emulsion stabilization. Emulgade Verde 10 OL is a naturally derived oil-in-water emulsifier developed by BASF with a focus on sustainability. Whether used as the key emulsifier or as co-emulsifier, it provides excellent and stable emulsifying performance, making it a versatile ingredient suitable for a range of applications, such as skincare or sun care. Emulgade Verde 10 OL has been clinically tested. It is mild and nonionic, thus ideal for sensitive skin and also suitable for the microbiome environment. It can be used to prepare D-phase nano-emulsion formulations that have higher technical and process requirements, thereby helping formulators to break through the limitations of traditional cosmetic emulsion technological constraints and providing the industry with more flexible and efficient solutions.
"I would like to thank the Fountain Awards for recognizing BASF. BASF has always been a pioneer and active advocate to sustainability and climate protection. BASF Care Chemicals has consistently strived to create and introduce sustainable cosmetic ingredients and solutions," said Viju Jose, Vice President, Personal Care Solutions, Care Chemicals, BASF Asia Pacific. “BASF is looking forward to exploring the application of more sustainable technologies in personal care with professionals and partners from around the world. We strive to bring more innovations and breakthroughs to the industry through collaborations and exchanges, thereby promoting the sustainable development of personal care products.”
Four awards during in-cosmetics Global
In April, at in-cosmetics Global in Paris, BASF's Personal Care business unit was awarded with four awards for its innovative ingredients. BASF won gold at the in-cosmetics Global Awards in the category “Kenvue Trusted Science Award” for its active ingredient Hydrasensyl® Glucan. The award recognizes innovative and effective ingredients which consumers can count on every day. At the same time the 2024 Innovation Prize by the German consulting agency BSB has been won in three categories for Epispot™, Tinomax® CC, and Emulgade® Verde 10 MS. BSB has been issuing its Innovation Awards since 2003. These awards recognize innovative solutions in the cosmetics sector for finished products, raw materials, applied concepts, and industrial processes in various categories.
Hydrasensyl Glucan Green is a type of multifunctional beta-glucan that merges the beneficial properties of hyaluronic acid and collagen. The structure of the molecule enables Hydrasensyl Glucan to bind large amounts of water in the skin like a natural water-superabsorber. At the same time, it is highly stable and insensitive towards harsh formulation conditions. Besides its clinically proven skin smoothing and hydrating properties, it helps to quickly soothe erythema.
Epispot is an extract of Epilobium angustifolium, a plant that is responsibly sourced from France. As BASF’s newly launched active ingredient, Epispot targets blemish-prone skin and has been awarded first place in the category “cosmetics/raw materials – active substances”. Addressing the root causes of an imbalance affecting lipids, microbiota, and the skin’s natural defense system, Epispot reduces skin shine, improves the appearance of facial pores, and promotes a healthy complexion.
Awarded second place in the category “cosmetics/raw materials – functionals and recipients”, Tinomax CC is designed for skin and sun care formulations. It enhances UV protection with SPF and UVA via light birefringence, and offers a significant sensory improvement, especially at higher SPFs. Tests have shown that formulations containing Tinomax CC tend to be significantly less sticky and greasy during application than formulations without this ingredient. The functionalized particle is of 100% natural origin content according to ISO 16128 and helps to improve the ecotoxicological profile of formulations.
Within the category “Natural products/raw materials – functionals and recipients”, BASF’s Emulgade Verde 10 MS has secured third place. The new versatile O/W emulsifier is suitable for a wide range of cosmetic formulations, providing shear thinning behavior and supporting easy distribution on the skin. It shows excellent compatibility with commonly used cosmetic ingredients, including both synthetic polymers and biopolymers. Emulgade Verde 10 MS is suitable for sensitive skin and can be used as part of microbiome-friendly concepts. The COSMOS-approved ingredient is readily biodegradable, preservative-free and based on 100% renewable feedstocks.
BASF’s award-winning ingredients are just one recent example of how the company’s Care Chemicals division is addressing future challenges. Sustainability, digitalization, innovation and new approaches to working together are the key cornerstones to Care 360° – Solutions for Sustainable Life.
